Interview with Jorj Sabio | Oli George Wells

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The Angry Bird. It was my first project in film soundtrack funded by a major organisation such as Netflix.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A remix EP of my debut album, inspired by a variety of electronic and dance music genres. Also writing recording and producing my second album.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Analog if possible. It's that rawness or dirt that just has something special. However digital can still do some incredible things.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: That the end product is something we can all be proud of.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Being creative and learning new things everyday.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Which things I like the most or am best at. I really feel like a Jack of all trades trying to be master of everything sometimes.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That my sound can be easily boiled down to a genre.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What is the project? What do you want to achieve? and what matters most to you and your audience/community?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Get in touch.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Nylon Guitar, Macbook, Solar Charging generator, microphone and Interface. Nature has the rest of the sounds I need.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I began writing music when I was at school. It wasn't any good but developed over time. Since, I trained originally as an actor at Mountview Drama school in London. When the pandemic hit, I began to develop my production skills to record music I had began writing. I developed my artist project through this and began connecting with songwriters and composers from all over the music spectrum.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Prolific.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Lianne La Havas, her guitar parts are so intricate, and her vocals and lyrics are so emotive. She tells a story so effortlessly.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: There is no correct way to do anything. Learn the rules and then learn how to break them.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Anything in the popular music spectrum, however most often R&B, Jazz, Soul, Pop and Dance. I also have experience with Rock, Folk and Film Soundtrack (See The Angry Bird Documentary on Netflix Youtube Channel + Enough by Mo Phoenix for examples)

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Vocals and pushing boundaries.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Originality, innovation as well as bringing out the soul and identity of a project.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I never have a typical process. It changes from project to project.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I use a Neumann TLM 103 for vocals and live instruments, which is set up in a sound treated space in my home studio.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I am inspired by a range of music and musicians. I love pop music artists like Lady Gaga and Beyoncé for their vocals, lyrics and theatricality, however I also love musicians such as Jeff Buckley, Lianne La Havas and D'Angelo, who straddle alternative, jazz and soul inspirations. Production wise, I love making use of my instrumental skills, with my collection of folk instruments (accordion, mandolin, cuban tres) as well as sound design. I am heavily inspired by folk music from around the world (Latin America, UK & Ireland, Romani).
