Interview with Subtlence

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Worked on a track where I built the hook from scratch, added layers, and shaped the vocal energy from start to finish. The artist hit me after like “yo, this changed how I got about everything.” That’s the kind of moment I work for.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Building my next project, recording new visuals, and dropping raw unreleased work on my Ko-fi for the day ones. Always creating.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet, still new here. But if I meet someone solid, I’ll definitely recommend.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital for speed and flexibility. Analog if I want color. It depends on the track, but I lean digital for the workflow.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I won’t fake it. If I take the job, it means I believe in it—and I’ll make sure what I give you holds up.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Taking someone’s idea and helping it become something they feel proud of. Whether it’s a hook, a harmony, or just a solid mix—it feels good knowing it hit the mark.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: “Can you match this style or vibe?” Yeah—if it’s honest. I’ll never force something that doesn’t feel right for the track. If I don’t think I’m the one for it, I’ll say that too.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That I just record something and send it off. I actually take time to feel out your track before I write or record anything. I’m not just a feature—I’m part of the process.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What’s the emotion behind the track? What do you want people to feel when they hear it? Any specific artists or references you’re pulling from?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: If you care about how your music feels—not just how it sounds—I’m probably your guy. Be honest about what you’re going for, and I’ll match that energy.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Mic, interface, laptop, headphones, and a Bible.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Started recording and experimenting years ago just for myself. Over time it turned into a real craft—writing, layering, mixing, developing a sound I could stand behind. Been seriously locked in for the past few years.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: A mix of smooth and sharp. Melodic, layered, sometimes floaty—but always grounded in emotion. I like things to feel cinematic without being overproduced.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Probably joji cuz he’s an inspiration of mine.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don’t overthink the first pass. The real magic usually comes from the raw take—fix later if needed, but capture the moment first.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Mostly indie pop, alt or rock, stuff with atmosphere and depth. But I’ve worked across genres as long as it feels authentic.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Writing and vocal delivery. I know how to hit the emotion the track is asking for—whether it’s smooth, gritty, or somewhere in between.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring feeling. Not just vocals or structure—real tone. I care about how it lands on the listener. Whether it’s a hook, a harmony, or background layers, I want it to stick with you.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Usually starts with a convo—I wanna know the tone, the message, the feel you’re aiming for. Once I get that, I start writing or laying vocals with that in mind. I do a few takes, layer up harmonies if needed, clean it up, then send a draft. If mixing’s part of the job, I’ll get it polished but still leave room if you wanna do the final master.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Simple setup that lets me move fast and keep things clear: Focusrite interface, solid mic, headphones I trust, and a few plugins I know inside out. Nothing overcomplicated—just clean, consistent, and vibe-locked.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Xxxtentacion, jojo, djo, tame impala, Michael Jackson.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I write and record hooks, full vocals, and help shape the emotional tone of a track. Sometimes I jump in to do some light mixing or layering, but most of the time it’s about capturing a feeling and delivering it clean. If it doesn’t hit right, I won’t send it.
