Interview with King

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I've helped add produce, mix, and master a project for a friend of mine that I feel helped develop a lot of my techniques as an engineer today.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: An EP where I’m handling production, mixing, and mastering — pulling influence from jazz, electronic, and hip-hop.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Still building connections here, but I’m always open to collaborating with other talented pros.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both have their place. Digital gives me flexibility and speed, but analog adds warmth and depth. I like using them together when possible.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I’ll respect your vision and deliver a professional mix or master that feels true to your style.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Hearing the transformation from rough mix to final master.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Customers usually ask to sound like someone that inspires them. I love the challenge of trying to vibe match while keeping it unique to the artist.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Many people think mixing and mastering is just about making the music louder. But it’s really about shaping the sound, balancing every element, and making sure the track translates well on all speakers. Keeping the emotion and vibe intact.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What’s your vision for the track? Are there any songs you want me to reference? How do you want the listener to feel?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Collaboration is key, I believe an understanding for what we both bring sonically to the table is what sets the standard.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Laptop, audio interface, headphones, microkorg, and my MPD32.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started making beats and experimenting with recording in high school. Over the years, I taught myself mixing and mastering, worked with independent artists, and built my craft into a professional service.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Clean but character-driven. I aim for polish without killing the raw soul of the track.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to work with JID — his flow and creativity are next-level, and I think collaborating would push both of us creatively.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Leave headroom when you send your mix for mastering.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Mostly hip-hop, R&B, alternative, and experimental beats, but I’m open to any genre.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Balancing dynamics and width so the track feels full but not over-processed.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: A fresh perspective and the ability to make elements sit together without losing the energy or feel.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I start by listening to the raw track a few times without touching anything—just to understand the artist’s vibe. Then I clean up the mix, balance elements, and shape the sound with EQ, compression, and effects.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My main DAW is Logic Pro X with third-party plugins, paired with high-quality monitoring and treated acoustics.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Flying Lotus, Thundercat, and Steve Lacy. They push boundaries and stay authentic in their process.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I mostly mix and master tracks, focusing on bringing out clarity, balance, and depth while preserving the artist’s unique sound and emotion.
