Interview with Marcos Cantu Medina
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. I've had the opportunity to use all kinds of hardware units, and while they work great and are really fun to use, I don’t think they offer anything today that will make or break a mix, especially considering the extra effort and time they require. Many of the top mixers in the world are working 100% in the box."
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love seeing how a song evolves from demo to final mix. It’s rewarding when someone trusts me with their track and then tells me how much they loved the result.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That is more technical than what it is. Mixing is a lot about feeling and emotion.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I’d say I approach mixing in an 'offensive' way. I do whatever it takes to get the sound I’m after, without worrying about how the EQ curve looks or whether I'm compressing too much or too little. I mix with my ears, not my eyes.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Try to listen to the song before you start processing. When you do process, make changes because you hear something that needs adjustment, not just because you feel like you have to.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I have had the fortune to work with a lot of music styles like Latin Music, Jazz, Pop, R&B, Rock, Indie, House, Rap, etc.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing, specially music styles that feature live instruments.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My goal is to bring 'life' to the song by making its key moments impactful, helping listeners connect with it easily.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I try to have a short conversation with the artist. This helps me better understand their perspective on the sound they want to achieve, and also get to know them better as an artist.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I find myself really inspired from producers like Neal Avron, Tom Lord-Alge, Peter Gabriel, Andrew Scheps, etc.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mix and Mastering.
