Interview with Gavin Beard
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always have a professionally mixed and mastered song in a similar style to compare your track against. Listen for balance, stereo width, tonal balance, and loudness. It helps you catch things you might not notice in your own mix and keep your track competitive in quality..
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on a diverse range of music, including pop, rock, Indie, R&B, country, and metal. I love bringing my expertise to different styles, and ensuring each project has its own unique sound..
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is delivering professional, high-quality audio tailored to each project. Whether it's mixing, mastering, or recording guitar parts. I focus on precision, attention to detail, and making sure the final product meets the clients vision. My degree in music performance also gives me the expertise to create polished and musically accurate results.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a musicians ear and technical precision, ensuring every track has clarity, balance, and impact with my guitar background, I add a creative touch and a feel that helps the music connect emotionally with listeners.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My process starts with carefully listening to the clients vision and any reference tracks. For mixing and mastering, I work in stages balancing levels, EQ, compression, and effects while checking across different systems. For guitar recordings, I track with high-quality equipment and ensure the part compliments the client's song. I provide updates and revisions so the final product matches their expectations
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work in a professional home studio, equipped with Logic Pro, high-quality condenser microphones, audio, interface, and Yamaha HS8 studio monitors. The room is treated with acoustic panels and sound pads for accurate, mixing and mastering.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I draw inspiration from a wide range of musicians and producers. For example, I admire the creative mixing techniques of Finneas, Butch Vig, Bob Ludwig, and Rick Rubin, and the innovative guitar work of Stevie Ray Vaughan Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix Brian May, George Harrison, and Eric Clapton. Their styles push me to constantly evolve and bring fresh ideas into my own work.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work I do for clients is mixing and mastering their tracks to achieve a professional, polished sound. I also record electric guitar parts as needed, adding that unique touch to their music.
