Interview with Zhang Jingming

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The songs I mixed have millions of collections and hundreds of thousands of comments on streaming music platforms, 《赢在江湖》姜鹏 ,《烈酒》付豪,《谁不是为生活用力活着》《我先动了心你却动了情》《未来可期》

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I have a music production company called "Wow Music Culture Media Co., Ltd." with two studios. Our main work includes recording, mixing and arranging, music publishing and promotion

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: No, I just registered an account. I will invite friends to register together

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital has made it possible for many hardware devices to be integrated into software, making them highly convenient to use. There's no need to connect various cables, and modifications can be easily made

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will respect the artist's choice and be willing to make modifications to satisfy them. Only when they are satisfied with my work can it be considered valuable

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: When the work is delivered and the customer is very satisfied

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Your price is not high, will you do it without care My answer is that I will do every project with my heart, regardless of the price. Only in this way can I get better opportunities

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: "Increase the volume of the vocals by 1db", "Increase the volume of the snare drum by 2db", and "leave the others unchanged". In fact, the overall headroom is limited, so adjusting the volume of other tracks may also require adjustments to the attack, release time, reverb, and so on

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What do you think is an excellent mixer and partner

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: For simultaneous recording, ensure that the audio tracks are clean and there is minimal crosstalk. It is best to record the vocals separately and it is advisable to have a spare track Audio can be in 48k 24bit or 44k 24bit. Some plugins may not work at too high sampling rates

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: I typically use software for mixing, but if I needed to use five hardware devices, I would choose the following: Similar near-field monitoring speakers, such as 8020 iPhone phone (as a reference monitor) tube tech cl1b UAD Effector Comfortable keyboard and mouse

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: After graduating from high school, I began to teach myself guitar, and later on, I taught myself music arrangement. Later, due to professional needs, I switched to post-production mixing. I experienced the boom of music, but now there are many people doing it, so I switched to online to seek more collaboration opportunities

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Clear and clean, beautiful vocals, powerful drum beats

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: The Weeknd, Taylor Swift, Because I like their music, I have work ability and can bring reputation to myself

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: When you're at a loss with the mix, try turning down the accompaniment. This way, you can get back to working from the beginning

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop, Rock, Vocal

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Vocal mix, Multi-Track Mix,drum set, electric guitar, I've been playing guitar for almost 20 years

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Clean, fusion, musicality, power

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: You can send audio files to my email, or contact me directly, After confirming the cooperation, I will provide you with the first version. If there are any modifications, we will communicate in a timely manner

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Computer, Mac Pro Software: Pro Tools, Reaper ADDA:apogee symphony I/O Effects: waves, UAD, Oxford Monitor Speakers: QUESTED V2108, Avantone Yellow Square, Genelec 8020 Microphones U87, AT4040 Folk guitar, Gibson Hummingbird Electric guitar, Shur Custom Shop Electric Guitar Effect Pedal AX8

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Chris Lord-Alge&Tom Lord-Alge,Their approach to rock music inspired me. It's not wrong to experiment with individual tracks, but ensuring the overall coherence of the music is key to the success of the song. I've listened to the remixes of One OK Rock, and I found the density and power of the sound to be stimulating. Richard Furch,In recent years, he has done many remixes of Chinese songs, such as G.E.M. "Light Years Away", Meng Ran "It's You", etc. His remix style is more suitable for current popular music, with great spatial sense, tight but distinct layers. Moreover, he has many students in China, who are very well-known Mick Guzauski,Daft Punk,Haha, awesome,Of course, he has many other works

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Customers will send me the track-split files. First, I will organize the track-split files sent by the customer, remove noise, adjust the vocals, align the rhythm, set up the signal flow, and then mix the music. For common pop music styles, I will focus more on the performance of vocals and drum sets, highlighting the texture and space of vocals, and the percussion feel of drums. I will make the music have sufficient dynamic space and maintain the power of the music. On the master track, some mastering will be done to ensure loudness and add some color to the music.
