Interview with SwuM

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One of my favorite projects was mixing and mastering tracks for Joji and XXXTENTACION. Balancing their raw emotional performances with lush, spacious sonics was both a technical challenge and an artistic honor—it reminded me why I love this craft.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m mixing and mastering upcoming releases for several independent artists, along with some self-produced projects blending electronic and ambient textures with hip-hop influences.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yes—producers and musicians I’ve collaborated with who share the same high standards for creativity and quality.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. Analog adds warmth, character, and depth; digital provides precision, recall, and flexibility. The magic happens when you know how to blend the two seamlessly.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Every project receives full, detail-oriented attention—no shortcuts. I’ll treat your record as if it were my own, ensuring it sounds powerful, musical, and timeless.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Hearing an artist’s reaction when their track finally feels “finished.” That moment when their vision comes to life never gets old.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Most artists ask, “Can you make my song sound radio/streaming ready?” My answer: Absolutely. I’ll make it hit commercially while keeping your artistic identity intact.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That mixing and mastering are just about loudness or plug-ins. In reality, it’s about balance, depth, and storytelling—turning technical precision into emotional impact.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask about their creative vision, favorite reference tracks, and what emotions they want their audience to feel. Understanding intent is the key to a great mix.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Listen for emotion, not just volume. The best engineers bring out the artist’s personality while making the song sound competitive and timeless.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Neumann U87 Ai, Apollo x16, MacBook with Ableton Live, Manley Vari-Mu, and Barefoot MM27 monitors. That combo can handle any record from start to finish.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: ’ve been producing, mixing, and mastering for over 15 years. I started as an artist and producer, which gave me a deep understanding of creative intent. Over time, I honed my engineering craft, working with both underground innovators and global names like Joji, bbno$, and XXXTENTACION.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My sound is cinematic, dynamic, and emotional—modern mixes that hit hard while feeling spacious and organic.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: ’d love to collaborate with artists like Frank Ocean, Fred again.., or FKA twigs—creatives who push sonic boundaries and value emotional authenticity in their sound.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Always leave headroom and focus on intent over loudness. A well-balanced mix will sound powerful naturally—mastering is the polish, not the fix.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Mostly hip-hop, alternative pop, electronic, and experimental crossover records. I’ve worked on projects that span from underground releases to multi-platinum mainstream hits.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is creating a mix and master that feels alive—balanced, detailed, and dynamic, yet emotional and musical. I’m meticulous about tone and texture and understand how to make a song compete sonically without losing its soul.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring clarity, energy, and emotion. My mixes are full and warm, but never overcrowded. I focus on translating the artist’s creative intent into a professional mix that connects instantly with listeners.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I start by studying the artist’s vision and reference tracks to understand the emotion behind the music. From there, I shape the mix around the vocal or lead element, build depth and width through EQ and dynamics, and finalize the master for a balanced, high-impact sound that’s ready for streaming and radio.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My setup combines the best of analog and digital: Ableton Live 12 Suite running through an Avid HDX System, Neve 1073SPX preamps, Universal Audio Apollo x16, Manley Massive Passive and Vari-Mu, Dangerous BAX EQ, SSL G-Bus, and Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor. Monitoring is done on Barefoot MM27 and ATC SCM25A Pro monitors, with Neumann U87 Ai and Sony C800G microphones for recording. Conversion handled by Burl B2 Bomber ADC and Lavry Gold DA—every stage optimized for warmth, punch, and precision.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by producers and engineers who blend emotion with precision—people like Rick Rubin, Mike Dean, and Nigel Godrich. They remind me that great sound isn’t just about clarity, it’s about creating feeling.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I specialize in mixing and mastering records across hip-hop, electronic, pop, and experimental genres. Artists come to me to elevate their sound—to take raw, creative sessions and turn them into polished, dynamic, and commercially ready releases that translate beautifully on every system.
