Interview with Juan Pablo Ferreyra

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: I would bring my acoustic guitar, my Stratocaster, a laptop with a solar-powered rechargeable battery (haha) and internet connection, my AKG C414, and an Audient EVO4 sound card that I take with me everywhere.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I started studying guitar at the age of eleven, thirty years ago now. I studied classical guitar, blues, jazz, rock, Argentine folk music, Brazilian music, orchestral arrangements, and counterpoint. I have worked as a session musician on more than 30 albums, as a music teacher, a musician on a cruise ship, an arranger, a music producer, and a composer. I am always searching for new emotions and experiences. In 2023, I released my first book of sheet music called “10 Argentine Works for Guitar,” aimed at students and concert musicians. I have performed concerts accompanying singers throughout Argentina, the Caribbean, Japan, Korea, and Uruguay.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: My style is elegance. I can adapt to different musical styles without losing my essence. I spend many hours getting to know the styles I play in depth, so I can become an increasingly better session musician.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: I would love to work with Donald Fagen because I admire all his music, his approach to harmony and arrangements. I would also be fascinated to work with Gustavo Santaolalla, because his music is full of spirituality and silences that have always inspired me.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Of course: work hard to improve your skills in both equipment and technique, knowledge of harmony, counterpoint, and music theory. Surround yourself with musicians who can teach you things, who inspire you to create more and better. Be honest and humble, so you can always be learning while giving your best.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: I usually work on classic rock, blues, pop, folk, and South American folklore.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: My strongest skill is creating melodic lines and riffs. This applies to intros, outros, bridges, connectors between sections, and counterpoint lines. My knowledge of harmony allows me to easily create harmonizations for both the guitar and other instruments in the band, including vocals.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: “I play for the song.” I always put all my musical tools at the service of the recording. My vision as a producer and musical arranger always leads me to think of the final product as a landscape of which the guitars are a part, balancing and enriching the song. My goal is to bring out the heart of the song and contribute clear and beautiful ideas. I usually record extra material; I prefer that the producer be able to choose the ideas that contribute the most. During the reviews, there is the possibility of adding what we feel is missing, such as a riff, a strum, etc.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: I start by listening to the demo of the song and letting the first thing that comes to mind set a certain direction. I always ask clients to send me audio references (if they have them); it's a useful tool for building the sound. Once I've determined with the client the layers of guitars we need, I start recording. I prefer to start with the more rhythmic guitars and continue with the arrangements or melodic lines. I usually leave the solos for last and do several takes until I get the desired result.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: Rick Rubin, George Martin, Wayne Krantz, Gustavo Santaolalla, Javier Casalla, Andrés Beewsaert, T-Bone Burnett, Steve Lukather, Bob Clearmountain, among many others

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: From 2008 to the present, I have recorded more than 200 tracks in Argentina and around the world. My work as a session musician and live performer are the most common jobs for my clients. In recent years, I have been called upon as an artistic producer and arranger, almost equally.
