Interview with George Duffield (DOKTOR DUFF)
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Working with Queen and Adam Lambert at a secret airplane hanger in preparation for their upcoming tour. I was stage crew for this, helping set up staging, lighting and audio.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Various Drum & Bass and Techno tracks.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: DOKTOR DUFF!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog, there would be no digital without it. Analog is more fun!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will get the job done to the standard you desire. Communication is vital for me and I will update as the project goes and always send though examples and different options of exports.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I am constantly learning and finding more interesting musical tools.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Timeframes. 48 hours is the maximum turn around time. I won't accept if the job supersedes this however I will discuss my estimated turn around time informally.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it is not a proper job. I have had some of the craziest experiences and seen some of the best artists from around the world due to my work.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What their end goal or vision is. What references they could provide. Best way of contacting them and their preferred way to listen to audio.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Just email or whatsapp me and lets see how we can help each other! Always happy to discuss projects informally.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Multitool. Guitar. Tent. Laptop. Headphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: 4 years professionally in the industry. 5 years DJing all over the UK. Played music on instruments for 12 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Very erratic. I am still finding my style!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Any 1980s rock band. Any drum and bass producer from the 1990s.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Music should tell a story and it is important the whole track reflects this story. I think starting with the, peak of the story, chorus or drop section it can allow you to pull parts from this crescendo.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mainly drum and bass.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My resilience, I will ensure what I do is done no matter what obstacles come in my way.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: In a time where digital audio is prominent I aim to try incorporate a live musical element to my own music. I use mostly MIDI and I enjoy playing live as much as I can. I also like to make a music track true to its maker. If you have a theme or a vison I will help create this.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Always begins with listening, using my best musical tool to understand the audio. Then I ensure the sound is safe and not going to clip or go into limit. After this i will creatively or correctible enhance a music piece. The sky is the limit for requests.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Using Ableton 10, very competent with this software. I use both a PC and Laptop. Access to 3 different monitoring stereo speaker set ups. Always listen on headphones that I have used for the last 4 years across all musical endeavors.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Queen, Motley Cru, Bon Jovi, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Shy FX, Break, Need For Mirrors.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Currently focusing on more music production due to having lots of free time. Collaborating with music producers across the UK and investigating different genres. The last 4 years I have been working in the live sound industry. I have worked across many venues and festivals in the UK, helping with all things audio in live music events. I have lots of experience with live instruments and working with artists and bands. I also spent 4 years at dbs Sound and Music Institute in Bristol gaining vast knowledge in all aspects of live sound. The main focusses were on sound system design and optimization, audio mixing and mastering with emphasis on corrective mixing styles and acoustics.
