Interview with Donbor
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One of the projects I’m most proud of is my EP Nothing From You. I created it during a very emotional moment in my life, and it allowed me to pour everything I was feeling directly into the music. It’s a deeply personal project that still resonates with me, not only because it pushed me to explore a different sound than what I was used to, but also because I included my own voice in one of the tracks. Even though I'm not a singer, I felt the song needed that human element, and it made the whole project even more meaningful.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently working on an ambient EP and a very energetic single under Donbor. I’m also creating three conceptual beat albums with movie dialogues, effects, and sampled sounds under Nummae. And I’m finishing two liquid drum & bass tracks under Dimmane.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not yet, I'm new to the platform and I don't personally know other providers here at the moment. But I'm definitely looking forward to exploring the community and discovering talented professionals.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I've always worked mainly in the digital world because it's what was accessible to me, and it has allowed me to develop my sound through countless tools and plugins. Analog gear is harder to afford where I live, so I can't speak from full hands-on experience , but I truly believe both worlds complement each other beautifully.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to give my very best in every project. I put all the knowledge and experience I've gained over the years into creating exactly what you have in mind.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I enjoy the most about my work is the moment when I connect deeply with a melody or a musical idea. There are songs that give me a brief but powerful sense of completeness, and that feeling is what keeps me inspired.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Most customers ask if they can use my music in independent video games or YouTube channels. I always allow them to use my free tracks from Bandcamp, since it's a privilege I never expected, to have someone want to include my music in their own creative projects.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Many people think that sitting in a studio doesn’t qualify as “real work,” but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Music production requires discipline, consistency, and a strong self-imposed structure, since there are no fixed schedules or guaranteed income. It also involves overcoming creative blocks and pushing through the mental challenges that come with turning ideas into something meaningful. It’s a craft that demands focus, patience, and a lot of dedication.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask about their influences, the type of sound they’re looking for, and the reference tracks that inspire them. This helps me understand their vision.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice is to feel free to reach out and share your ideas openly. A good project always begins with a genuine conversation, where we can see if we're aligned creatively and understand the vision you want to bring to life. The more we connect and communicate, the easier it is to turn your concepts into a finished piece of music that feels true to you.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I’d definitely take my MicroKorg MK1, the Akai MPC One Plus, and the Roland SP-404MKII—they’re the core of my creative process. I’d also bring a generator to power everything, and a pair of Presonus Eris E5 monitors so I can keep producing no matter where I am.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been making music for more than 10 years. For a long time it was just a hobby, but around five years ago I decided to fully commit and turn music production into my full-time career.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my style as dark, energetic, melancholic, and emotional.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with Lorn. His music had a major impact on my productions, and I consider him one of the best when it comes to sound design and creating uniquely atmospheric worlds. He stays true to his sound, and that authenticity is something I deeply admire.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One helpful technique I always use is keeping the kick and bass levels tightly controlled from the start. Using VUMT Deluxe, I set the kick around -3 VU, and when I add the bass, the combined level hits 0 VU. From there, I build the rest of the mix. Make sure to use Type: VU and set CAL to -14
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I primarily work on electronic music, and I'm especially known in the synthwave scene for creating energetic and dark tracks. I currently develop three parallel projects that explore different sides of my sound: • Donbor – My main electronic project, where I blend cinematic elements, ambient textures, and detailed sound design. I also experiment across genres such as trip-hop and techno. • Dimmane – A liquid drum & bass project focused on emotional melodies, pianos, and vocal-driven atmospheres, with a softer and more uplifting tone. • Nummae – A beat-driven project where each album follows a specific concept. I work with sampling, chord progressions, and textures to create anything from calm, reflective moods to energetic rhythms.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my musical sensitivity. I can compose many ideas, but I only finish the ones that truly convey emotion. I focus on creating music that feels honest and expressive, making sure every track carries a meaningful atmosphere and connects with the listener.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I like to truly connect with the song and create melodies that make the listener feel something. I focus on capturing the emotion of the moment and translating it into musical ideas that resonate. Whether it’s a subtle detail or a powerful theme, I aim to craft moments that stay with the listener—something they can return to and be transported to a memory or a feeling.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My workflow can vary depending on the project, but I usually start by creating loops or textures that capture a specific emotion, and from there I expand the idea into a full track. When I'm working on an EP or album, I like to develop a clear concept first, allowing the music to follow a cohesive direction and tell a story. For more energetic tracks, I often begin with the drums, shaping and processing them to achieve a powerful, driving feel. Other times, I spend days experimenting with sound design, creating dark, gritty tones through various techniques, running sounds through my Roland SP-404 or using analog-style plugins to give them character and depth.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is centered around a hybrid workflow that blends hardware and software. I work with Yamaha HS8 monitors for accurate monitoring, a Universal Audio Volt 476 as my main interface, and an MPC One Plus for groove and production work. I also use a MicroKorg MK1 and a Roland SP-404MKII for sound design and sampling. For performance and creative experimentation, I rely on a Traktor Kontrol S4, and I use an Arturia Minilab MK2 as my main MIDI controller. This setup gives me a versatile environment where I can move seamlessly between composition, sound design, and full production.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm inspired by a wide range of artists, including Apparat, Radiohead, Moderat, Lorn, Max Richter, Deadmau5, The Chemical Brothers, and Massive Attack. Some of them influence me through their emotional and cinematic compositions, while others inspire me with their unique sound design and innovative production techniques
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I usually help artists bring their musical ideas to life by creating full, polished productions from scratch or from a simple demo. My most common work includes composing melodies, arranging tracks, designing sounds, and building the atmosphere for a song or EP. I also collaborate closely with clients to define the musical direction, refine their ideas
