Interview with GrandpaSoul
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: For my own work, I'm working on a couple albums. One of them centered around analog synths, the other specifically employing one synth.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not at the current moment, but I'll be sure to let folks know!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: When it comes to instrumentation, I love analog. As costly as it can get, the sound you get from a subtractive analog synth is unbeatable. Warmth, richness, a sound that truly sticks with the listener.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is my signature sound, given alongside my 100%.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: It's the sheer fact that I'm getting to share my creativity and unique timbre. Being naturally drawn to the creative arts, this is a no-brainer for me. And the icing on the cake is working with other people that have the same creative drive as you.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Please note that while I have access to a wide array of sounds, I do not do live instrumentation at this time. Also, templates/reference points are quintessential!!! If you have an idea for what you want your work to sound like, that helps me create a work better suited to your needs.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Roland JV-2080, my Behringer Model D, my Black Corporation ISE-NIN, my Roland Fantom XR, and lastly, my computer.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've known I want to do music since I was a high school freshman. I've been publishing my own works to streaming services for two years now, with my first album Mood.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style has an element of spontaneity to it in the sense that my sound isn't limited to just one flavor of music.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I don't have anyone specific in mind. I just wanna do what I love and share my creative spark with others and theirs too.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: In the 9 years that I've been a producer, one thing I can say is that the biggest cause of writer's block is the inhibiting structure seizure the mind places on a free flowing craft. If you even so as cut the thinking in half, you can get much farther in a project and you'll get a lot more done.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: My forte is centered around synthesizers, and repurposing the sounds of my favorite childhood video games. What I find most prominent in my work is house, dance, jazz, vaporwave, and a hint of disco spice.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill in producing is being able to glue everything together in a song. Whether it's sound choice, chord progression, melody, or EFX.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: An element of sound design, as I like to create custom patches for songs from any of my synths. But the main focus is on features that accentuate and complete the arrangement. In my own independent work, I always strive for lush, vibrant, rich and detailed harmonies and chords. This is a sound I had the hardest time finding in other music, and so it's a sound I aim to be proficient with.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to start out with the either the chords, or the drums and work my way up/down.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio focuses on the usage of hardware synthesizers, favoring analog subtractive synthesis, but can also stretch to PCM sample, virtual analog, phase distortion and frequency modulation. Everything is sequenced via MIDI in a DAW.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I can't really name names, as I've listened to a lot of different music and seen many others in action in this field. The majority of my influence comes from video game music from games I used to play as a kid. I also used to listen to a lot of 80's synthpop as a child, which is where I get my fascination with synthesizers from.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I in a sense am a ghost producer, as making songs for others to use is what I love to do. Being able to make something someone actually wants to use, and seeing them use it in their own creative way gives me an untold level of satisfaction and accomplishment.
