Interview with Diego Carbonell
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: "I am especially proud of a feature documentary I worked on immediately after graduating college. It was a massive production that required travel to several demanding locations. My role was the Director of Audio and Music. I was wholly in charge of everything related to the film's sonic landscape, including composing the entire score, managing all music licensing, and overseeing the final audio recording and mixing for the entire feature."
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: i currently manage a media production company and manage several projects at the moment.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: i don´t know anyone in here yet.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both, because every technology is just a new tool to take advantage off
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will do everything in my power to turn your vision into a reality , and i will deliver on time. always.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That i can sit on my studio all day, making music and cal it a job, it sounds crazy when i think about it to much.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Question: When can you deliver Answer: In the agreed upon time
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That this is an non lucrative industry
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: first question is always : Whats the story. doesn't matter if its a movie, documentary or video game, the story comes first. If the project is a more simpler one like editing audio for a podcast the questions become simpler, delivery date, budget , etc
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: "It's hard to find people you can trust. In my experience with clients, the number one complaint is always that service providers are unreliable. I would recommend choosing people that have a track record of delivering. Even over quality sometimes, having someone that delivers on the agreed-upon time is really hard to find."
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Midi piano , laptop, headphones, my ilok with all my licenses, an axe and a water filter.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: "My career, like many, began in my room making music on the piano. Living in Mexico, I had to be resourceful to forge a clear path forward, but I kept grinding. My first professional project was in the corporate world, creating music for institutional videos. Following that, I was hired by a soul band, which allowed me to tour the country and fully understand the perspective of a live musician. I then worked my way up in a music studio where I learned the critical importance of recording and production. Collaborating with world-class musicians in my early years provided wisdom and insight that any starting musician would cherish. I landed my first feature documentary score, which was shown in movie theaters across the country. Following that success, I founded my own music and media company. This venture has allowed me to secure my first placements on major platforms like Netflix, BET+, and more, while also creating my own online music academy, a platform that allows me to give back to musicians who are just starting their journey."
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is defined by heart over technique. While I am versatile and adept at composing across a wide number of genres, my core aesthetic remains minimalistic in nature. I focus intensely on creating memorable music that always tells a story. My compositions can be grand and epic, yet consistently maintain a deeply heartfelt and intimate quality."
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Harry Gregson Williams. He´s one of my favorite composers, his work was mainly the reason i became a composer my self.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Trust in the power of contrast. its a great way to keep people engaged on your music, always keep them guessing whats coming next.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I primarily focus on media composition and scoring, including music for films, series, television, video games, and other related multimedia projects.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Beyond communication and responsibility, composing music that makes you feel something. Im always there for the clients needs, no excuses.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: "Every producer brings their own taste. I consider myself a composer who focuses almost all of my energy on feeling. I want people to feel my music, not focus on my technique, but on what my heart sounds like."
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: "My main focus is the client. First, I truly make an effort to understand the client's vision, no matter the project—it can be a podcast, a song, or SFX for a video game. The project doesn't begin until the client is comfortable moving forward, fully knowing the time and investment needed. Then, contracts with all the important information are sent, reviewed by the client, and signed. After that, I normally work in three stages, each with its own review window. Each stage is approved by the client before moving forward. At the end, all the files are delivered to the client."
