During my teenage years in Italy, I played in many rock bands as lead singer, bassist and guitarist - inspired by Jeff Buckley, Nirvana, Green Day, Artic Monkeys, and more - while studying singing and electric guitar privately and at improvisation techniques seminars around the country like Arcevia Jazz Feast, SPM Fermo, Musicando Pescara.

After moving to the Netherlands, I studied Acoustic Guitar online with Trinity College London, and I enrolled at Abbey Road Institute Amsterdam, where I got the opportunity to study mixing and mastering with the industry's best such as Andrew Scheps (Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Hozier, Adele), Luca Pretolesi (Drake, Dua Lipa, Diplo), Sylvia Massy (Aerosmith, Prince), Brad Sundberg (Michael Jackson), Haydn Bendall (Kate Bush, Massive Attack), and Maria Triana (Bob Dylan, Miles David, Britney Spears), among others.

Later, I was offered a job at the Abbey Road Institute, where I got to teach recording and mixing classes to the new generation of musicians and producers. All this while working with international artists (mostly in Paradiso or Sonic City Studios in Amsterdam, as well as remotely) and while working on my own music inspired by modern indie artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Bon Iver, Mk.gee, and Daniel Caesar.

Interview with Luca Milozzi

Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise that my main goal is to realise your vision. There is no space for ego when working together; if we happen to have a different opinion on a mix or a performance, the final say will always be yours!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: As a Singer, I mostly work on indie, rock, pop, alternative music inspired by artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley. As a Guitarist I get to play lots of fingerpicking and open tunings on the acoustic guitar, but also distorted electric guitar parts as well as the new wave of heavily-modulated DI sounds inspired by musicians like Mk.gee. In my mixing I get to work on a lot of pop and rock (and all the sub-genres), but also R&B and occasionally jazz too!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: For mixing and mastering I have access to Genelec and PMC (speakers + sub) in the studio; and Kali Audio speakers (with room treatment and Sonarworks room correction software) in my home studio. For recording vocals or guitar parts, the setup can change based on the song. When I record Vocals, I like to use an SM7b going straight into the UAD Apollo's preamp for a clean sound that gives you lots of flexibility in the mixing stage. But I also like to use a UAD 610 tube preamp into a 1176LN compressor for songs that need more "analog grit". For Electric Guitars my main picks are my modded Fender Strat and the PRS SE Custom, going through my pedalboard and then my Brunetti tube amp, recorded on a homemade ribbon microphone (or DI if it's what the song needs). For Acoustic Guitars I love the warm sound of my Gretsch parlor or the clarity and definition of the Sire R7. Mic setup changes all the time for acoustic guitar (mono or stereo; dynamic or condenser mics). As for the Bass, I like to record the Epiphone Les Paul Special Bass straight into the UAD Apollo preamp or into the Avalon U5 DI-preamp.
