Turning Ideas Into Records

Carson Meloon on SoundBetter

Got a voice memo, unfinished song, or idea stuck in your head? I’ll help turn it into a finished record. I offer songwriting, production, recording, mixing & mastering, with piano, acoustic guitar & drums. Your vision stays at the center. I help bring it to life.

I’m a songwriter, producer, and audio engineer who loves helping artists turn ideas into finished records. Whether you have a fully developed song, a rough demo, or just a voice memo, I can help shape it into something you’re proud to release.

My primary services include songwriting, music production, recording, mixing, and mastering, with experience recording piano, acoustic guitar, and drums. I can help develop arrangements, add instrumentation, capture performances, and take your song from its earliest stages through the final master.

What matters most to me is that the finished song still feels like your song. I’m not interested in forcing an artist into a particular sound; I want to understand your vision and use my musical and technical skills to bring it to life.

Communication is a major priority for me. I value clear expectations, honest feedback, quick responses, and collaboration throughout the process. I want you to feel comfortable sharing references, ideas, revisions, and concerns so we can create something that genuinely represents you.

If you’re looking for someone who can combine the creative side of songwriting and production with the technical side of recording, mixing, and mastering, I’d love to work with you.

Interview with Carson Meloon

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One of the projects I'm most proud of is a piano instrumental album I created from scratch, starting as an idea and developing into a real, mixed and mastered, published work. My role was the songwriting, arrangement, instrumentation, recording, production, mixing, and mastering. I'm proud of it because it challenged me to think about the entire song, but also the whole album, rather than just one part of the production.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently working on expanding my production and mixing portfolio while collaborating with independent artists on songwriting, production, recording, mixing, and mastering projects.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital. It gives me the flexibility to experiment, edit, revise, and work efficiently while still achieving a professional sound. I care more about making the right creative choices than whether the tools are analog or digital.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I'll listen to your vision, communicate clearly, and treat your song like it's worth getting right. My goal isn't just to make something sound good, it's to make something that feels like your song.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love taking something that starts as a rough idea or a rough mix and watching it become a finished song. It's especially rewarding when the final version captures something the artist was imagining but couldn't quite create on their own.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: A common question is whether I can work with a rough demo or voice memo. Absolutely. A rough recording can be enough to communicate the core idea, and we can build the production around what makes the song special.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That production is just adding instruments and plugins. Good production is really about making decisions about arrangement, performance, tone, dynamics, space, and emotion, all working together to support the song.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I usually ask what they want the song to sound and feel like, what they already have recorded, what artists or songs they're referencing, what parts they want help with, and what they hope the finished song accomplishes.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Look for someone who understands the sound you're trying to achieve and communicates well, not just someone with the biggest list of gear. A good collaboration should feel like you're working with someone who cares about your song and understands your vision.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My laptop, audio interface, studio headphones, a versatile microphone, and a MIDI keyboard. With those five things, I could still write, record, produce, and mix a surprising amount of music!

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've been developing my skills in music production and recording for several years through songwriting, recording, producing my own music, and working on projects for other artists. I've continued building my skills across production, mixing, mastering, and instrumentation while studying audio production alongside my other coursework at university.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is collaborative and especially melodic. I like to invoke a lot of emotion with the music I create because that's the power of it holds! I like productions that feel polished without becoming overly complicated, and I try to make every instrument and production choice serve the song.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I'd love to work with an artist who is deeply involved in their songwriting and has a clear artistic identity. The most exciting projects to me are the ones where I can collaborate closely with the artist and help develop an idea into something neither of us would have created alone.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don't try to fix everything with plugins. A strong arrangement, good performances, and intentional sound selection will usually make a bigger difference than adding more processing.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I primarily work with singer-songwriter, indie, pop, acoustic, and Christian music, but I enjoy working across different genres and adapting my production to whatever the song needs.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is taking an idea and figuring out how to turn it into a complete, cohesive song. I enjoy working across songwriting, production, instrumentation, and mixing rather than focusing on just one part of the process. Though I'm also good at the final stages in mixing and mastering; fully polishing the song.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a combination of creativity and attention to detail. I like finding ways to strengthen the songwriting, arrangement, instrumentation, and overall sound while keeping the artist's original identity at the center of the song.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I start by understanding what the artist wants the song to feel and sound like. From there, I listen through the references and existing material, make a plan for production or mixing, work through the song in stages, and send updates along the way. I value clear communication and use revisions to make sure the final product matches the artist's vision.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work from a home studio setup built around a DAW (Logic Pro X), quality studio monitors and headphones, MIDI instruments, microphones, and a variety of software instruments and mixing plugins. I’m able to record and produce vocals, piano, acoustic guitar, drums, electric guitar, and other instruments, depending on the project.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by producers and artists who know how to make a song feel authentic while still sounding polished. I especially appreciate artists who are involved in the songwriting and production process rather than treating those as separate parts of making music. Noah Kahan, Charlie Puth, Coldplay, and many more!

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I typically work with independent artists who have a song idea, demo, or recording and want to turn it into a polished, complete song. I help with production, songwriting, arrangement, recording, mixing, and mastering depending on what the project needs. A lot of times, it's just the mixing and mastering process.
