Interview with Max Emil Hurlebaus

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I started to play bass when I was 12, taking lessons when I was 13 until 18 years old, at the same time I had my first band (ska, reggae, soul). Then I studied MediaMusic (music production) from 2012-2017, did a lot of recording and mixing projects at that time, made music for a documentary movie, produced an audio drama and a lot of music.

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: Take a break.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: Supporting free creativity by being non-judgemental, open and excited about experiments. Also, I am chill and a good communicator in creative processes.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: Haha – everything I ever experienced! If you want me to, we can talk about the lyrics, the performance, the melody or the mixing. I am here to help with everything that helps your song.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: • Creating a project agreement to set goals, deadlines, payment terms and final file formats • Unterstand the piece of music, the universe it's set in, the message • Having a vision about style references and sound aesthetics • Organising the DAW project • cleaning up signals and making edits • dial in texture, life, crunch, dirt, shimmer, glitter, magic – everything necessary to make the initial vision reality • processing revisions and feedback

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: Trusty Neumann KH 120 for monitoring, Logic Pro X, some outboard gear like Klark Teknik EQP-KT Equalisers, RNC and RNLA by FMR Audio, Hologram Electronics Chroma Console, Midas and SSL Preamps, Neumann, Sennheiser, Shure and Lewitt Microphones.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: Definitely Andrew Scheps, Ian Shepherd and Rick Rubin!

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: Mostly mixing jobs, but I am also teaching electric Bass and giving courses in Logic Pro, co-producing and helping with creative processes, and even making cover artwork for some artists
