Interview with Imad Salhi

Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: - What are your musical ambitions. - What are your influences? - How much input would you like? Or do you have a set idea in your head?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Bring lots of references of songs that inspire you. Always communicate what you like and what you don't like quickly, if you're indecisive then it communicates that you don't like it. Share our work in progress to as many people as possible - it will help with direction.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: FKA Twigs Her voice is so powerful and beautiful - Her style is so groundbreaking and unique, yet popular.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: If your song delivers emotion, and keeps the listener engaged with only voice and instrument, then the production work that will follow will easily fall into place. Think of "Starboy" by The Weeknd, would still sound beautiful if sung on a piano.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mainly Pop
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Patience.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: We usually start with arrangement, lyrics, and structure. I normally help the artists make sure these 3 main songwriting foundations are solid, before we start talking about recording or instruments. Basically, a song needs to be able to deliver, even without all the bells and whistles of the production. After that, it's all about solid engineering work to record and mix the song, and solid production work, to bring to life the artist's idea.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: After an initial conversation with the artist about what his overall music ambitions are, and deciding that we are a good match, I ask for reference tracks to research what kind of sounds the artist likes. We then book a studio session, and try to lay down the foundation of the track (either guide vocals, drums, bass, or main riff). The vocals are usually redone at a later point, and the process takes us until the artist is happy with the track. Once I receive final signoff, I polish it and master it, ready for release.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a studio in East London, sitting in a complex where other producers and musicians work, it's a great community! I have a piano, guitar, bass guitar, synths, and recording equipment.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love Arca (FKA Twigs producer) - all of his stuff is so groundbreaking and unique. Doc McKinney (The Weeknd producer) - beautiful use of simplicity Jon Castelli - a mixing engineer that uses emotion and feeling in his mixing work, rather than the usual engineering guidelines.

A: Turn the artist's idea into fully mastered tracks, researching the type of sounds/effects they want to use.
