Interview with Nat Sherwood

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm really proud of Mad at God w\ Sarah Saint James as that song has such a strong message and has touched a lot of kids in the LGBT community that really needed some love and care to feel belonging. Music with a message is always so important!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently working on a few longer form projects in the Emo Pop realm, as well as a few tracks with LA based artists. Zoom sessions are crazy. Landed my first Sync this year, so that's dope!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: My colleague Peter Holz is an absolute weapon and does amazing mixes for his clients every day! An inspiration for sure!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital! Instant recall saves lives!

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to take absolute care and trust in your musical journey and to hold your hand through the process together.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love music, obsessively. The satisfaction when a song finally comes together and you can't help but move is one of the best feelings in life.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: I'm not sure, I feel like I'd need to have a larger audience to be able to answer this better! I feel I build good relationships with the artists that I work with and typically very transparent in these relationships.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What do you want to feel when you listen to your music?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Get yourself organised and prepared with your vision and get ready to bring it to life! The best projects I work on have a strong vision from start to end. They always are the fastest and easiest projects and always turn out the most inspired and exciting.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Laptop, X4, my Custom Telecaster, U87 and a good pair of headphones!

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I've been doing this for 10 years across many, many genres. In the last 2 years I've really found my footing with pop music.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Cinematic and deeply emotionally driven.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I would love to work with Bring Me The Horizon or Brakence.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Take the time to make sure that anything you're adding to the song needs to be there. Then, make sure it's taking the amount of space it needs to. Top and tail all your sounds to get the cleanest headroom and suddenly your production comes to life with half the amount of noise.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I mostly work on Pop Music. Coming from a Metal background I am incredibly flexible though and have made music in almost every genre.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: I have incredible attention to detail, a strong engineering background as well as a strong innate melodic intuition.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Genre-bending decisions, strong rhythmic intent and strong melodic intuition. Also a LOT of tasteful distortion and saturation, I love it when shit hits loud and powerful!

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I like to get to the basic version of a song as fast as possible. Even if that's just root notes and basic topline. From there I really like to flesh out what the journey of a song feels like. Where do we want to take the song emotionally and how are we going to get there. Then the deep dive in to sonics and vocal delivery!

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I work in a professional studio I share with Peter Holz (Gang of Youths, Peking Duk) and Nathan Sheehy (Birds of Toyko, Dune Rats, DZ Dethrays).

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Oliver Vaughn is legit the dopest Producer out. Jordan Fish is also a huge inspiration with his genre bending productions.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Production \ Co-Writing and Mixing.
