Interview with Ohad Nissim Mastering
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I’m especially proud of mastering FLO’s Album, which was a big project for the group and helped establish their sound globally. My role was to give the tracks cohesion, impact, and the emotional connection they needed to stand out.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes - I’ve collaborated with some incredible mixing engineers and producers here who share the same passion for excellence. I’m always happy to make introductions when it feels like the right fit.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Analog gives warmth, depth, and harmonic richness, while digital provides precision and recall. My hybrid setup blends the best of both worlds.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to respect your music, communicate clearly, and deliver a master that elevates your work while staying true to its essence.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Helping artists reach the finish line with confidence. There’s nothing better than hearing the excitement when they play the master for the first time.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They often ask: “Will my mix be good enough for mastering?” My answer: If the emotion and balance are there, it’s always worth mastering. I’ll also give honest feedback if any mix adjustments could make the final master stronger.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mastering is just making a track louder. It’s about balance, translation, and emotion - ensuring the song connects with people on every system and feels finished.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask about their creative vision, reference tracks they love, and how they imagine the song sounding when it reaches their listeners. Understanding their intent is crucial to delivering the right result.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Listen to their work and see if it resonates with you. A great mastering engineer isn’t just about gear or credits - it’s about someone who understands your vision and can bring it to life.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Lavry Gold converters, Knif Eksa EQ, UnFairchild compressor, Terry Audio CEQ, and my monitors - because if you can’t hear accurately, nothing else matters.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started out as a DJ, which led me into music production and mixing. Over time I discovered my passion for mastering and dedicated myself to it full-time. I’ve been mastering professionally for nearly a decade and have been fortunate to work with Grammy-winning engineers and top artists along the way.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Harmonic, musical, and balanced. I aim for masters that feel big and exciting but remain true to the heart of the mix.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with James Blake. His music blends intimacy with experimental depth, and I feel my harmonic approach to mastering could highlight both the emotional subtlety and the sonic richness in his work.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is often more. Instead of adding new layers, focus on refining what’s already there - subtle changes in EQ, compression, and balance can bring far greater results than overprocessing.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work across genres, but most of my projects fall within pop, R&B, hip hop, and electronic music. I love diversity in sound and approach every genre with the same respect and attention to detail.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my ear for balance - knowing how to push a track to its fullest potential while keeping it natural, dynamic, and emotionally impactful.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by carefully listening to the mix and discussing the client’s vision. From there, I take a minimalistic but impactful approach - enhancing clarity, balance, and emotion while respecting the original intent of the mix. I always provide revisions and maintain close communication to ensure the artist feels fully confident in the result.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is fully equipped with a carefully curated analog mastering chain, including units like the UnFairchild, Knif Eksa EQ, and Hum Audio LAAL, alongside Lavry Gold converters. This hybrid setup allows me to combine the warmth and depth of analog with the precision of digital workflow.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by mixing engineers like Teezio and Manny Marroquin for their balance of artistry and technical precision, and by artists who constantly push creative boundaries - people like Frank Ocean, Rosalía, and Kendrick Lamar.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I specialize in mastering singles, albums, and EPs for artists, producers, and labels worldwide. My focus is on delivering a polished, competitive, and musical final product that translates across all listening environments and platforms.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently mastering upcoming releases for major and indie artists across the US, UK, Europe and Asia - ranging from hip hop projects to pop records set for big label campaigns.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring polish, depth, and musicality. My role is to elevate the emotion and energy of a track so that it connects with listeners instantly, without compromising the essence of the mix.
