I have written, performed, mixed and produced tracks for several Top10 artists; including Craig walker (Avener - Fade Outlines), Valerie M (Groove Armada) and Everett Peters.
I work from the very beginning of creating songs - from the songwriting, adding instruments, right the way through to sound production, mixing and mastering. My work involves tightening up the performances, arrangements and applying instrumentation and vocal arrangements. All this is to accomplish seemless song production.
Arrangements of instrumentation include anything from Drums, Bass, Synth, Strings, Pianos - real Steinway/ Fender Rhodes/ Wurlitzer 200a, Sound-Design and Vocal.
Vocal Production includes topline dynamic focus, tuning/timing tweaks and harmonies. Musical training thankfully make all this a breeze.
At the start, I developed my production skills whilst working with Londons finest engineers and producers. Studios include Bunk Junk & Genius, Air, Raezor Studios and Mark Angelo. These were studios where The Orb, LCD Soundsystem, Stevie Wonder, Manic Street Preachers, Bheki Mseleku and countless others recorded.
My creative and technical background stem back over 2 decades, where as a musician I work regularly with Craig Walker ("Again" - Archive/ The Avener - "Fade Outlines"), Valerie M (Groove Armada/ Freestylers), Nick Van Gelder (Jamiroquai/ Brand New Heavies/ Ozric Tenticals).
I now work from my recording studio, which is the perfect place for inspiring creativity in songwriting, production and mixing projects for new and signed artists.

Interview with Julian Chown
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will perfect their music and take it beyond expectation.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Working with The L.A., who's been number1 in Reverb Nation for relentless weeks. This project has been coming together beautifully with our combined ideas. The sound involves rock alongside epic dance elements.

A: Knowing what I do makes a positive difference to others
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Lorenzo Sevn Alteres because he's so detailed with his sound designing.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both because they work in their own way. I like that analogue adds noise and dirtiness, whilst digital can also apply that to around 90%. I like digitals automation which reminds me of when I work on an SSL 3000, though a heck easier/quicker.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How much is it? Ans: Depends on exactly what you need to do and what the style is. Send me what you have and I can listen and advice on what is needed to perfect it.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What music do you enjoy listening to regularly and what are your routes?
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: It's done in an hour
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Always have a direction of you get lost or simply just create... Learn to play the sofa you love abs master an instrument! - always the best advice!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Assuming there's and the animals don't mind if like a Fender Rhodes suitcase piano, Bechstein grand piano, Fender Telecaster guitar, my computer with everything in it right now and x2 U67 microphones. Done headphones or/and some nice speakers too if that's allowed though as I said, I wouldn't want to scare the critters.. ha!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Started at 17 as tape operator in studios in London including Raezor, Bunk Junk & Genius, Mark Angelo Studios. I then followed on to working at Sony and worked on various games and continued on releasing tracks with Universal and Sony BMG. Worked with some big names over the years including Number1 artists and writers including Craig Walker and Valerie M and have produced and mixed tracks reaching the top20 officially music charts in the UK.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I work to completion and keep listeners interested in music with sound design and arrangements
Q: Can you share one music production tip?

Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Musicianship, production, arranging and mixing
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A journey that is full in sound, yet spacious musically. I'm a music sound scapest with an edge and complete theoretical background of music
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Once I am in it, I work it to completion. As a musician I with musically (doh) and as a listener I rock the track with an edge. I usually produce and mix together - it's just how my ears and creativity unravels.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My recording studio is filled with vintage analog gear such as Teletronix LA2A, Neive, Fender Rhodes MK1, Wurlitzer 200a, Prophet 6, Ensoniq SQ80. Digital includes the lines of Fabfilter, Soundtoys, Acustica, Slate Digital, ... allowing tracks to be produced with ease for radio-ready broadcast. If you are a singer in need of a professional that knows how to guide your vocals musically and dynamically for a track, along with innovative music production, musicianship, song arranging and mixing you're in the right place. Send be an email
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Quincy Jones Pharrell Williams (though he's inspired by the above) Avicii, as many ask me to create a similar sound at times. He certainly innovated some great things in his music combinations. Mutt Lange and his fiddling methods, I do similar things in this respect including vocal harmony production.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: *Arranging and developing a production. *Writing chords to fit Melodies. *Making the drums to suit the music production. *Vocal editing - tuning, timing + mixing *Vocal Harmony arranging - this can be done with a single lead line and also I can sing new rhythms over the lead and send them back for a singer to re-record. *Mixing anything from 5 to 150 tracks with my analog and digital studio to radio and release quality
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Damion Albarn because he is out of the obvious production box
