Endorse Troy EverettI have collaborated with Troy on a bunch of productions from Film Scores, Jazz, Hip-Hop and RnB/Soul stuff -- he has nailed the brief every single time! Incredibly talented, goes above and beyond with his ideas. I love how he also incorporates a few extra additions in his file delivery - there are always a few gems in there that I wasn't expecting. Super quick turnaround - great sounds, great playing.
Interview with Troy Everett
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I say this when it comes to people wanting strings with specific ideas....DON'T BE AFRAID TO SING THAT IDEA OUT. Learning bowed string instruments takes years of training and dedication, so I get that it can feel odd—or even intimidating—for singer-songwriters and rappers to explain their ideas. You might not know the lingo or the instrument’s limitations. But if you’re coming to someone like me, chances are you already have a sonic vision in mind. Humming or singing an idea is often more helpful than showing me sheet music. It's actually a tool that's used alongside sheet music in the classical world. I’ll let you know if it works—and if it doesn’t, we’ll find another way to make it happen. Clear ideas beat silence—don’t worry if you don’t know what "pizzicato" means.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My viola, my laptop, a Shure Beta 58A, and my modular rig. I know I'm missing a 5th piece of gear, but I'd do the smart thing and trade my 5th piece of gear for an internet router.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Although I could get everything from trap to country music from one week to the next, I mostly work in neoclassical, hip-hop, and more popular genres (singer-songwriter, r&b, pop, etc.). Regardless, strings like many acoustic instruments can sound great in any genre, & I'm truly up for anything.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Joe Hisaishi, Flying Lotus, Madlib, Liam Howlett, & Björk to name a few
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I work as both a producer for various genres, and a session player. Due to my background, I mostly write and perform orchestral recordings for clients. Duties involved include string arrangement, recording, and performance of all parts including violin, viola, and cello. See my website for examples. I also specialize in sound design through modular synthesis, & often mix orchestral sounds with eurorack to create interesting sounds.
