Mike Wheeler

Songwriter/Lyricist/Producer

Mike Wheeler on SoundBetter

Songwriter/lyricist available. Remote production, beatmaking and song critiquing also available.

I write meaningful, melodic pop/indie songs for everyday people who want to feel a connection.

My lyrics have a hint of The Kinks' Ray Davies to them.

I am happy to branch out into other genres as well.

I am equally adept to write solo as well as with other writers/artists.

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

Interview with Mike Wheeler

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: That I will do my best to deliver your vision.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Kris Bradley, Michael Averill, Kimera Morrell and Hugh Webber

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital purely for speed and cost. If I can help keep costs down then that is better for my clients.

  7. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  8. A: Can we work with you again :) It's usually how quick can you deliver the project. I usually say 5 weeks but will aim to have it done in 4 (like Scotty in Star Trek !).

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That these days with AI all I do is press a button......there's at least 2 I press !

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: I usually work on pop/indie music.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: Create an outline sketch first of the project. This helps everyone see the project and it's easier to change things at this stage to make sure we've all got the same vision. The song then builds up from there. Get the groove going , build up the parts etc.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: They all do to be honest. I can always learn something from everyone.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: It varies from producing a track to writing a lyric

  19. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  20. A: Several projects ranging from writing library music to writing and producing a hip-hop EP to co-writing a couple of rock tracks

  21. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  22. A: That I get to bring dreams into reality. There's something special about starting off with absolutely nothing and finishing with a song that never existed before and has been brought to life.

  23. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  24. A: Be honest with what you want. The more information you have, the better.

  25. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  26. A: what their vision is for the song ? is it for themselves as artists or for pitching ? what reference tracks do they have ? and my personal favourite, what's the budget ?

  27. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  28. A: I've been writing on and off for many years. It's only in the last 7 years when I've been taking it seriously and found the right tribe to be with (the wrong tribe seriously sap all your belief and energy). I've studied with The Songwriting Academy and been on several songwriting retreats. I've done a couple of year's writing with Steelworks Studios. I started getting into production about 3 years ago. Covid and lockdown hit so it seemed like the perfect time to stay in, sat in front of a computer all day :) I started with Ryan Tedder's studio course and progressed on to Kris Bradley's Home Studio Boss.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: Sir Paul McCartney...come on, who wouldn't want to work with him ?

  31. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  32. A: Logic Pro, Egg monitors, Native Instruments plug-ins, Slate Digital plug-ins, Waves plug-ins, Omnisphere plug-ins, Spitfire Audio plug-ins.

  33. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  34. A: Acoustic guitar (I presume there's no electricity !), paper, pens, solar iPhone charger, iPhone

  35. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  36. A: Trust your ears.
