Interview with Zac Myers

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Twiceyoung EP Little Mind Alike. That album is a masterpiece to me.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working on getting more content online of my playing and my sounds i achieve.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not at the moment where im brand new on here, but hopefully soon!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital, but with analog touch. For example i run the Console 1 through my slate raven that allows me to mix drums as if im on a vintage Neve or even SSL board. EQ's, Compression, Gate, i can control it all with that vintage drum sound.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: You will not be disappointed with the tracks i send you.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love adding to someones else's art. Very rarely am I tracking something I created, but rather I get to add to someone else's journey.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: I most commonly get asked about my setup and playing experience. My answers can be found above.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: People that arent musicians or artists or even creative in someway never understand the passion we as musicians have for what we do.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask them to tell me about each song im tracking and what they felt in the moment when writing it. I ask what mood or color they picture the song. I then ask for the BPM and Key of the song and a WAV file to track along with.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Trust your instinct. When choosing session players you will know what you like and don't like. Speak up.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Tough question. Does kit count as one instrument? lol. I guess it would be a Nord stage 3. A ludwig legacy maple kit with Zildjian K Sweet series. A Martin D45. Of course a mac and pro tools setup. And finally universal audio preamps.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I was a full time touring and session player for 10 years (right out of high school). Since then I have had the opportunity to work in TV as well as now owning a studio.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Pocket

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with John Mayer. His songs have inspired my playing from a very young age.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: I have found using a Shure SM7 (vocal mic) on my main snare bottom helps get that extra "crack" needed. Blended just right it adds a huge amount of depth to the overall snare sound. I also use a DW Moon mic on the kick out and Audix D6 on kick in. Very cool combination.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop, Indie, Rock, Americana, Folk, Country, Latin.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Feel.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring depth and feel first and foremost. Back beats and grooves.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: When someone sends me a wav file of their song (with no drums) I will fly that track into a pro tools session and track drums over top of it. I will send the client 16 individual tracks back via WeTransfer or DropBox. I can put my signature sound on the drums or send you raw files to have someone else mix, your choice.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I own the recording studio with unlimited mic and preamp possibilities. Rig 1 for me is a Risen Custom Kit 22'' kick, 12"rack, 16" floor, and then snares are 14/6.5 Risen Maple, 14/6.5 Ludwig Black Beauty, 14/5 Ludwig Acrolite, 10/6 PDP popcorn, 13/5 Leedy Aluminum, and 14/5 Yamaha Maple.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Ash Soan, Aaron Sterling, Steve Jordan...the list goes on and on.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I offer drum tracks for all styles and genres of music My playing follows the "fills bring thrills, but grooves pay bills" philosophy.
