Joe Kelly Jr. on SoundBetter

I write uniquely personal songs that warm my being and then record them. I'd love to help you do the same. I specialize in lyrics and melody and offer unique perspectives on guitar and bass. Let's get out of the box and into your art.

Multi-Instrumentalist, songwriter, producer and engineer. Graduated MI Recording, Los Angelas 1997. I am an independent, self produced musician. I work great with similar artists trying to find their way through an ever changing landscape. Art first. You first. Great motivator if you need a push. Let's create!

I feel so honored and happy every time Joe invites me to work on his projects. I wrote this once, but I have to do it again: he's a multi-talented singer-songwriter. I love his music. Thank you so much, sir!

A dream project of beautiful truly unique songs. Was an inspiration to work on Joe's music because it's rare to find his type of musicianship. Professional and highly recommended.

It was a pleasure to work with Joe. He gave me plenty of room to be creative but also just enough direction to let me know what he was looking for to make his tune come alive. His music was so much fun to play on for a bass player. I can't wait to hear more from him.

First time recording for Joe, and it was a great experience. Excellent communication, a beautiful song, and a very good audio reference to record on. Thanks a lot, Sir! Hope to work again with you.

Interview with Joe Kelly Jr.

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I engineered a song called Crazy L'il Mouse by In Bloom. The song was featured in the film The Bandits (Bruce Willis. Billy Bob Thornton). I saw this band in a tiny club in Santa Monica. Approached them after and we went on to record 3 songs. Two of the members turned out to be the sons of the Beach Boys. Fun project with a great outcome. It's on Youtube.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently tracking a 6 song project which I wrote and am performing.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Marcelo Ifor

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Analog. My ears say so. Although digital is what I mostly use. It's quite spectacular but I just love knobs and light.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: You're going to get what you want. I always get there.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: People. I think they are magical

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Q) What do you think of this? A) What do YOU think of it?

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: It's easy.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I listen. The questions naturally come

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Push your own limits. Go further

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Laptop, Apollo, 57, acoustic guitar, bass guitar

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started as a recording engineer 25 years and slowly gathered the tools and skills to self produce and release music. Now I'm an independent artist releasing music consistently.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Organic. Vulnerable. Dynamic

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Miley Cyrus. Night Moves. They are my spirit animals

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Baskin Robins serves 31 flavours of ice cream and vanilla still outsells them all

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I would say I float around the Indie rock vibe but my tastes are extensive and my influences go deep. Versatile and engaged.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: People

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring exceptional vision to every song. I get inside the song and turn it inside out and outside in making sure we've got it all. Sometimes that is very little. Subtleties in emotion and colour.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I flex with the artist. Getting that initial communication is key. Go over references and research. Find the vibe. Get to it.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I like to work mainly out of my home studio. Streamlined "in the box" set up using Universal Audio hardware and unison technology. The sound is pro and the costs stay low. I use a vintage fender guitar and bass. I favour Silver Jubilee and 55 Fender Amp plug ins. I can record fully mic'd bass and guitar cabinets using top mics in a larger studio upon request.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I'm have inspired by many artists, producers and engineers over the years. Rick Rubin, Neil Young, The Flaming Lips, Band of Horses, Modest Mouse, Dave Fredmann, Steve Albini and on and on.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Up to this point it's been helping artists get across the finish line, whatever that may be. Lyrics, melodies and hooks are my specialty.
