Steve is a true professional, the instrumentation he came up with was good but wan’t the direction I was going. Steve fixed it within a day and had me well on my way. From there Steve was very efficient and took excellent direction and as a result he helped craft an excellent song. Highly recommend.

I can't say enough good things about working with Steve. He's amazing at capturing the essence of songs in his productions. He's utterly professional and intuitive - a real pleasure to work with!

I mean, where to begin. I was drawn to Steve instantaneously when I realized he had produced some of my favorite OneRepublic records. I asked Steve venture down a different path and create this cocky yet melodic R&B/Pop record and to say he didnt disappoint would be quite the understatement. Steve honed in on the exact vibe and sound I was hoping for and delivered above and beyond. This is chart topping production at a cost too good to be true! Thank you Steve!

Words are cheap in describing the gift that is Steve Wilmot. He took a good old song and transformed it into fresh and current greatness in a very short period of time. If you don't care much for your socks, make sure you give Steve a chance to blow them off!

Steve did an incredible job of coming up with instrumentation for a basic guitar & vocals tune and producing it into an awesome sounding final mix. He was fantastic at incorporating some notes I had - I couldn't be more pleased with the result!

as always, it was an absolute dream working with Steve and I couldn't be happier with the final product. I brought a half-baked idea to Steve and he added exactly what the tune needed - nothing more, nothing less.

Steve's also just incredibly friendly and a pleasure to work with - I'd recommend him to anyone looking to make music in a heartbeat.

Interview with Steve Wilmot

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: People probably don't realize how heavily involved I am in the actual basic song. I'm a believer that a song needs to stand on its own with an acoustic guitar or piano before we press into more involved production.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: My production space houses new and vintage preamps (API), vintage guitars, vintage drums, world percussion, tube compression, an 1/8" 8-channel Tascam tape machine, an expansive vinyl collection, and a world class microphone closet. Oh and there are plenty of posh candles and incense.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Denny White is a masterful writer, producer, and singer who I HIGHLY recommend! Alex Strahle is a superb guitarist who I hire for just about everything I work on.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I believe in a healthy balance of both! I love the warmth and character of analog, but I also love playing with the endless possibilities of digital.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: For years I was a rock drummer and bassist (must be a rhythm thing!) and I was pursuing my lifelong passion of writing and recording music. I was a studio engineer for years, constantly traveling and meeting new talented people. During that period I was constantly writing beats and instrumentals, and eventually someone really wanted them! Since that turning point I've had the privilege of writing and producing full time with amazing and iconic artists.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Sidechain compress your vocal delays so they don't interfere with your vocal ;)

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: I can bring just about anything to a song! I write, produce, perform many instruments, and I often sing bgv's. I love sound design, creative harmonic movement, and dynamics.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: I usually get files from people and go immediately into the laboratory! I love to play with audio and begin to craft right away. I get quickly inspired, and I usually don't stop working until I have something I'm really proud of on day one.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: I'm inspired by record producers who are great at every stage of a song's process from conception and writing, to producing and engineering, to mixing. Some amazing examples are Greg Wells, Danger Mouse, and Rick Rubin.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: Quite often people come to me with an acoustic demo of a song and we mold the basic song itself into something truly special. Then I'll produce a track, add their vocals, add all of the special sauce, and mix/master it. I'm a one stop shop from beginning to end.
