Gregg Allen on SoundBetter

Are you trying to break into the competitive world of music licensing? Do you want to make your sound more marketable? I’m Gregg, a producer, songwriter and remixer. I want to help you create innovative and memorable music that is super synch-friendly!

I've produced and mixed tracks that have appeared in major TV shows such as CSI NY, Last Comic Standing, Viceland, Shameless, 90210 and Portlandia. You can also hear my work in commercials for Mattel, Tamagotchi, Living Spaces and New Balance.

I have worked with both majors and indies including Universal, EMI, Sonoton, and more.

I have co-written and produced songs that have charted on:

* Billboard Hot Dance Airplay
* Billboard Dance Club Play
* MusicWeek Commercial Pop Top 30

I have 13+ years of experience producing music both commercially and for sync and I can give your song that x-factor it needs to make it extra licensable.

I can produce and compose original tracks for you from scratch or work in collaboration with you to build a track around your idea.

I specialize in catchy pop with epic hooks, dark cinematic songs that set the scene, unique EDM that fuses multiple styles and synch-friendly indie.

Please note that I work remotely so you must be able to professionally record your own vocals.

Gregg and I have been writing/recording music together 10+ years. We successfully license our songs in Film & TV, signed our project Taxi Doll to a major label deal and have charted internationally on Billboard & MusicWeek. He’s such a talented producer, great collaborator and all around music industry pro. Can’t recommend him highly enough!

I'm a songwriter & arranger/ producer who's worked in the music industry for 25 years. Gregg Allen is one of the rare people I have met and collaborated with in this business who is at the same time immensely talented and creative, professional, and humble. He meets deadlines consistently, his quality of work is always excellent -- he is truly a pleasure to collaborate with. I can't recommend Gregg highly enough for your next project. He has an extensive archive of current sounds, and a keen ear and knowledge of production techniques - he's especially gifted with Pop, EDM, and Dance genres

Working with Gregg has always been the most professional, time efficient, and pleasant experience. He is such a diverse producer, we have made several different styles of songs with him and he can nail each one. He has great insight into the industry and I am extremely grateful to have him as a producer and teammate.

Camille here from CXC... working with Gregg is a dream because he makes very melodic music that is easy to write to. He has an amazing ear. He also happens to work fast, which is a huge perk. We've had success with placements with him as well. He's been an integral part of our music-making. We're looking forward to working on the next tracks together!

I’ve loved working with Gregg. He’s creative, quick, and knows the licensing world very well. We’ve written and produced some great songs together and have gotten a bunch of placements as well! Definitely recommend.

Interview with Gregg Allen

  1. Q: How would you describe your style?

  2. A: My style is similar to my favorite soups (hot n sour and gumbo). Add all the right ingredients that compliment each other to create the perfect flavor that you can't stop listening to (or eating in this analogy)!

  3. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  4. A: I would want to work with the trailblazers in production who broke traditional rules of production and set the new standards we aspire to today. These artists/producers include: Portishead, Kendrick Lamar, Draft Punk, Glitch Mob, Imogen Heap, MIA, Diplo, Rick Rubin, etc.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: Is the hook, "hooky" enough? if not, let's get back to work.

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: Working on an album for an international label that fuses multiple styles including trap, rock, drumline and filmscore. It's a crazy mix of sounds and super fun to produce!

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will make sure we have great and consistent communication throughout the process so you always know where we're headed and are always aligned with the direction. Ideally, we'll work on multiple projects together, so let's make the first and every one after that great!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love molding simple ideas into memorable songs that get stuck in my head each and every day.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That this is a hobby. This is a business and I treat every interaction and project the same as any profession.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: Most clients ask how long it will take. I work fast and can usually turn tracks around much quicker than anticipated. BUT, getting it right is much more important than getting it done fast.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I like to ask what artists who they would like to share the stage with on tour, who is the audience they see buying these songs and who else do those people listen to. Establishing musical landmarks is a very important way to get aligned on the goals for the project.

  19. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  20. A: I recently co-wrote and produced a track for Universal/Bruton that I love. It's a perfect blend of cinematic trailer and female-fronted dark pop. The song is incredibly dynamic and takes the listener on a journey that keeps them on the edge of their seat.

  21. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  22. A: Both depending on the track. Digitally for speed and reliability, Analog for warmth and "that sound."

  23. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  24. A: Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions to make sure you have found the right person to partner with to help achieve your vision. The right fit will make the experience a pleasure and ideally exceed your expectations for your song.

  25. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  26. A: My air conditioner so I'd stay cool, my MAC with Logic, my Apollo pre-interface, a generator in case my MAC runs out of battery, and my phone so I can call for a ride home when I'm ready. ;)

  27. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  28. A: My path has always been to learn and then do. The more skills you have in your arsenal, the more valuable you are in your team. I have spent half of my career within music production and the other within music marketing at various labels and management companies so I know what to do with with the music after it's released.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Usually, I work on pop that is infused with electronic and hip hop tracks.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: I really enjoy crafting memorable hooks while making the vocalist shine!

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: Typically an artist will send over a rough track that includes piano or guitar and vocals. We'll discuss influences and what kind of sound and audience-appeal the artist is shooting for. Many times we'll collaborate on a Spotify playlist of songs in the style we are trying to achieve so we have a base reference for the song.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I work mostly in the box for speed, efficiency and my ongoing love for new VSTs. I use an epic amount of Kontakt Instruments, loads of WAVES plugins, analog-modeled UAD plugins, and unique plugins from boutique companies across the globe to help give some X-factor to my productions.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: I like to take simple ideas from the artists I work with and turn them into full-fledged productions. This can start with a voice memo, a simple vocal melody and chord pattern recording, or a track idea. I'll take these and help craft an amazing arrangement, with just the right amount of unique sounds, along with a touch of my own flavor and serve it up hot!

  39. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  40. A: Depending on the song, i will help mold the perfect arrangement, add energy, infuse the track with unique sound design, help craft the right amount of harmonies and vocal effects to help the vocalist shine.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I'm inspired by artists and producers who push the envelope of production techniques and create new trends. Same favorites include: Justice, M83, Run the Jewels, The 1975, The XX, MGMT.
