i just wanted to say a big thank to joel , for putting together an amazing backing track for my song , in a relatively short space of time . from the start joel was very patient with me , and in the end created a top notch composition and mix / master

It is very rare for a songwriter to find a producer who understands the vision you have for a song. I have worked with Joel on multiple tracks and on all occasions, I have been bowled over by his professionalism, approachability and his industry-leading skills. Top notch production and I would happily work with him again.

Interview with Joel Evenden

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: Since 2002 I've been freelance, though I spend about 6 years working out of Olympic studios.

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: Will I do stuff for free? Answer = probably not. (but maybe)

  5. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  6. A: I composed and did the sound design for one of LG's mobile phone adverts recently, for TV and in the Cinema, it was great fun mixing the sound design elements in surround and I was pretty chuffed to see it live!

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: I just finished some vocal production on a remix, and next I'm going to finish a template I'm putting together for my next library project.

  9. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  10. A: I'll have a think about that.

  11. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  12. A: Both are great for different reasons.

  13. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  14. A: If you're not happy, I'm not happy.

  15. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  16. A: Enjoying my job!

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: How long it takes and how hard you have to work to get good at this stuff!

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: Usually I ask if they have a reference track, and what they like about it. I find that helps so much in getting on the right track.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Preparation is the key to getting great results, the more you've done the ground work the less time it will take me to get you from A to B.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: A solar powered generator, an apogee one with a built in mic, my Sennheiser HD 600s, my strat, and a macbook.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Emotive, Accurate, Clear, Powerful.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: If you want to work with me, I want to work with you :)

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Quality not quantity!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop, Rock, Acoustic, Electronic.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I'd like to think that I although I've trained as an engineer and mixer, I've always been playing in bands and composing along side of that, I've been on both sides of the production process, so I have a good sense of what an artist wants, I can get involved creatively and have the knowledge of how to technically get it there.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Soul and precision!

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Typically I'll assess the clients project, multitrack or mix and discuss with them in detail regarding the expected outcome.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I run my remote production service from my studio, which is an extension on my home. It's an accurate listening environment with GiK acoustic treatment with Genelec & Yamaha monitoring.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Anything I can't immediately pick apart!

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Mixing, Arranging, Mastering, Composing
