Frank Slimm on SoundBetter

Freelance producer, mix engineer, songwriter, beat maker and remixer from London, UK. Specialising in pop music genres, credits include Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, Margot, Lorens & Alma Grace. Hit me up for anything from song starters to final mixes.

I started playing piano when I was four, drums at 11, and taught myself guitar after my father bought me my first one for my 13th birthday. I grew up on soul, funk and disco as a child before moving onto metal, hardcore and punk in my teenage years, rounding out my young adulthood with hip-hop, jazz and pop music, the latter of which takes up most of my production career today.
I'm a producer, songwriter, beatmaker and, foremost, a mix engineer. I'm looking for artists to work with to help their visions become a reality, anywhere from a very basic melodic idea, perhaps with a couple of chords strung together underneath a catchy top-line, all the way to finished tracks that need a final polishing in the mix room. I can make instrumentals from reference tracks or from absolutely nothing, and I can write chord progressions for vocal ideas, or anything in between.

I've worked with Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes on their End Of Suffering Remixes EP, where I produced and mixed the remix to the track 'Love Games'. All I had to work from was the acapella vocal take, and everything else you hear in the track was made from scratch by me.

I have a guide to my pricing on this page, but everything is negotiable for the right project and the right artists. Contact me here today so we can make something great together!

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

It's a privilege working with Frank and looking forward to doing a bigger project together sometime. Intuitive, talented and skilled at his craft. Really good at tuning in to the feel you are aiming for but also bringing his own unique production style to the track.

Frank is an incredible producer!! I came to him with a recording made on my laptop and he managed to turn it into something much much better :) It was great to find someone intuitive and able to translate my non-technical suggestions so well. I also really appreciated his willingness to work with me to get it sounding as good as possible. Really highly recommended!

Interview with Frank Slimm

  1. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  2. A: I love Tom Misch and his line of song writing / production that he hits so well. The blues guitarist meets beatmaker vibe really resonates with me and I think he's cornered that sound that's almost John Mayer meets J Dilla so nicely.

  3. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  4. A: Most commonly, artists come to me with almost nothing, just a desire to create. We'll talk about their past releases and where they're at, and where they want to be. Perhaps we'll trade some inspiration, sending through links of albums they're into, and then from there I put together chords, sound design, beats and other harmonic ideas to get the ball rolling, and we don't stop until we have a finished, mixed track. Sometimes this will be a single, but often something larger like an EP or an album. I'm really here as an extra pair of hands and ears to help artists get to where they want to be.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: My studio is simple but effective. I record most vocals through an SM7b into a dbx 500 series preamp and compressor, sometimes followed by a Pultec style EQ for some colour. Most of my mixing is done in the box though. I'm a bit of a Waves fanboy, but I use FabFilter and iZotope products a lot as well. I have a Fender Telecaster, a Jazz Bass and an old violin that my girlfriend plays! And of course a record player in case an artist ever wants to sample something from the crate.

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: I just finished an EP with one of my artists 'Margot' called 'Make It Last', and it is definitely the biggest and best thing I've worked on so far. I love working on larger projects like this to really dig deep and get creative with the same team over a longer period.

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Take your time, ask questions and make sure you've found the right person for YOU. The biggest, flashiest, most expensive producer or mix engineer isn't always the right one for everyone. Having a personal connection will go a long way and reflect in your final product.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Start in mono! If you can get a song to sound good in mono, then you can mess with panning and stereo field stuff afterwards and it will sound even better.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Mostly pop music, especially when working from the ground up on songs. But I've also done some remixes, like the Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes one on my page, and some more electronic music.
