Interview with Joi "Stewdiopheen" Wynn

  1. Q: How would you describe your style?

  2. A: My style is clean and efficient. I like to keep the lines of communication open and clear so I try to bring.

  3. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  4. A: My strongest skill is my patience. You have to have patience to spend hours listening to the same thing over and over again whether you are recording, producing or mixing. It's one thing that people often compliment me on. It takes a certain type of patience when you are working with creatives so I'm grateful.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: I send out an invoice with a deposit and then we agree on the details.

  7. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  8. A: I'm inspired by so many! My number one inspiration is Missy Elliott and that's a whole other story. I love the vocal production of Donald Lawrence and Kirk Franklin. I enjoy being able to watch Yonni create, it's an entire vibe. I'm so blessed.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: They ask me how long I've been engineering. I've been engineering for over 10 years now but more professionally for the last 4-5 years.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: That it's easy and everyone can do it. Well, it's not and they can't.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: I usually ask why they do music. What is it about being an artist or singer/songwriter that keeps them going.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: My advice is to be prepared with everything that you need to submit. If you are sending sessions, make sure you are providing a project that is properly labeled and formatted with the bpm and the key of the song noted. Be detailed in your notes.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: MacBook Pro, Apollo Twin, Song C800G, Beyerdynamic DT 770's and a TubeTech CL1B

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I started out in the church, singing in the choir, then playing the drums and then running sound for the church. Every level of College was some form of Music Recording. I've been engineering in a professional sense for 7+ years and overall for over 10 years.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: I would love to work with Summer Walker. I think that she's on a completely different level than some of these other artists. She's a dope writer and singer. Her melodies are amazing and her chemistry with LondonOnDatrack is great for R&B music right now!

  23. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  24. A: Currently, I am working on a few projects for some pretty amazing artists.

  25. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  26. A: Many of the people that I look up to and are inspired by are on SoundBetter and I would definitely recommend their work.

  27. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  28. A: I take pride in the feeling that you get when you press play at the end of your session or on your final mix. So it's my promise to make sure that you love to press play and that you do so with confidence in what's comes out of the speakers.

  29. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  30. A: I love the process. Working with an artist. Producing their session. Helping them write. Encouraging them to connect with their memories. Creating a vibe and making them as comfortable as possible. I have fun with the process. I enjoy mixing their vocals and music.

  31. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  32. A: I was able to work with Candice Boyd where she was a feature a well-known rapper. She's a vocal monster. Her tone, her agility, her creativity...it's something amazing to witness but even more amazing to capture and sculpt. I was the recording engineer for the record.

  33. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  34. A: Both. Creative and uniquely used, they compliment each other.

  35. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  36. A: I believe the key to capturing and producing a great recording is understanding that as the engineer I contribute heavily to the atmosphere or the flow of the session. An understanding that means understanding that the energy in the room, with the artist and the session itself, has to be right. Speed, efficiency, creativity and the ability to communicate effectively with the artist contribute to that energy and that's key.

  37. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  38. A: I usually work on Hip-Hop, Trap, R&B, Pop and Contemporary Christian music.

  39. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  40. A: I truly believe that I bring a unique ear to a record. I'm an engineer but I care about the quality of the record too. Whether it be in the studio or through my mix, every Pro Tools or Logix Session is a canvas to me.

  41. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  42. A: I record in Pro Tools and Logic Pro X, I use Nuemann U87, TubeTech cl1b, Yamaha HS80's & NS-10's

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: In a recording/mixing session I engineer, produce, arrange edit and comp vocals.
