Steve Melville on SoundBetter

I'm a Mixer / Producer based in Melbourne Australia.

Hi I'm Steve, I'm a mixer / producer and session drummer and I'd love to work with you! I've worked on hundreds of songs as either a session drummer or producer but my main passion is mixing great music.

I've been a music lover for as long as I can remember, I love nothing more than getting involved in a project and seeing it develop and grow and finally be sent out to the world.

One of my favourite things to do is to craft a backing track around a vocal or bring depth to a mix using all the tools at my disposal. I often add beats, synths, samples, live drums, keys etc to produce a fully formed track.

I've worked with many indie guitar bands and added modern elements to their tracks which has worked really well. I've also done straight ahead mixing for rock and pop bands. I've also been given the bare bones of a song and helped with arrangements and instrumentation to create something that's ready for the worlds ears.

Creating music with others is my passion. Communication with the artist and attention to detail is paramount. I'll do all I can to make sure you get exactly what you want for your project.

Send me an email through 'Contact' button above and I'll get back to you asap.

After recovering from a long tour, and ending up in Australia where I met Steve. I found him to be accommodating and assertive in his playing and engineering skilling and his great love of modern music. The time I spent in the studio was a learning curve, and most days productive.

Interview with Steve Melville

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both! It's an age old question, each has its merits so I use them both where they are needed most.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: Lately I've been doing a lot of Pop / EDM type stuff as well as Lo-Fi Hip Hop. I like to work on songs that have a groove. I guess Indie pop is where I came from and is a genre I will always love, I'll always jump into that genre with pleasure! I used to do a lot of mash up's which you can probably find on the web if you dig deep enough! I recently mashed a vocal from a band I produced with Justin Timberlake's / Timberland's Sexy Back just because it was fun! Just slapped one on top of the other! Check it out on my SoundCloud - but remember, it's all in the name of fun!

  5. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  6. A: Mixing mainly, however I've produced entire tracks based around a vocal.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: Frank Ocean would be amazing

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: The vocal is king!

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Listening. Both to music and musicians.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: I listen to a broad range of musical styles and can appreciate and understand why a particular piece of music is appealing. I have the skill to bring that knowledge to the production and incorporate it into the music. I can make something sound modern and classic at the same time!

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: If possible I like to speak directly with the client either by phone or skype to get an idea for the production and maybe get a rough mix or demo sent over. From there it's all in with mixes sent back and forth. I don't stop until the client 100% satisfied with the result!

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: Well I have 2 amazing UAD interfaces along with all the fantastic plugins that come with that platform. Pro Tools is my comfort zone with a bit of Logic Pro thrown in for spice! Monitoring is via Genelec 1032A's and Yamaha NS10's (which have been barking at me for 20 years now!)

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: I love the way Frank Ocean creates an atmosphere using minimal sounds, I also find some of the modern hip hop artists very inspiring. I like to cherry pick from these production styles to create a unique, modern sound.
