Josué Parrilla on SoundBetter

Your project deserves its unique music. I've worked in projects for Netflix and Bandai Namco and have a Master’s Degree in Scoring for Film, TV, and Video games from Berklee College of Music.

Each project is unique, and as such, deserves its unique music – not music from a library of premade examples.

I will create music which complements your visuals, helps you tell your story, and enhances the experience of whoever interacts with your creation.

From a solo instrument, to a VST-based score, to a sound design or synth-based score, to a full orchestra… Or any combination!

I’m a film & video games composer and multi-instrumentalist and I have received awards at several competitions (Montreal International Film Scoring Competition, Oticons Faculty International Film Scoring Competition, International Songwriting Competition, and John Lennon Songwriting Competition).

Contact me and I will create a custom quote and work plan for you. I’ll address your specific needs and work with you to help you find the alternatives that best suit you, your project, and your budget!

Professional, extremely talented, superb ear and taste! Lots of attention to detail, excellent communication. Josué can handle and get involved with any musical production task. You can’t go wrong leaving something in his hands. Long history of great results working with him.

Interview with Josué Parrilla

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: A laptop, a MIDI keyboard, a mic, a preamp... and headphones... Assuming that laptop is full with nice software, plugins, and libraries, I'll get the live sounds from the nature world around me... Don't need much more!

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: Sound is king! Your musical ideas won't shine unless yo treat them with the utmost "sonic respect". A great musical idea will be lost or be greatly diminished in effectiveness if the sound world in which it exists is subpar.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I will put my heart and soul into your project and do my best to create a music and sound world which perfectly complements it. My goal will be for you to be absolutely satisfied with the music I create for you and for it to complement the visuals, help you tell your story, and enhance the user experience.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: The biggest misconception: that recording an orchestra requires a super budget. It doesn't! That is, if you know what you're doing ;)

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Communication is everything! Don't be afraid to ask questions or to show me your ideas and references. Also, tell me each and every detail of your project, what it means for you and what you wish to achieve. My goal is for you to be totally pleased with the music of your project, so the more we explore possible sound worlds together the better.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: My life has been music from day one. I have a bachelors degree in music composition from the University of North Texas and a masters degree in Scoring for Film, TV, and Video Games from Berklee College of Music. I've worked on music productions from pop artists to video games, to films, and regularly collaborate in music creation and production with projects from USA, Spain, India, Hungary, Germany, Colombia, etc. My life is musical story telling, 24/7.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: I combine live instruments with electronics and sound design as needed to achieve the desired sound universe of the project. From a fully VST- based score, to a solo instrument, to a full orchestra with sound design elements and synths. When orchestras are needed, I work with various orchestras around Europe, recording them remotely, which allows for an amazing level of musicians at an affordable price. These orchestras can be heard in Hollywood films, Netflix, HBO, and the like, as their level is top-notch, so they are very in demand today. But it takes a special skill set to work in this way, which I offer you. Each project is different. The sky is the limit.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: Do you use a real orchestra? My answer: Yes! I will write a real orchestral arrangement which we will record with a real orchestra. I work with amazing orchestras around Europe which are specialised in remote recording. Such orchestras are used by Netflix, HBO, and other production companies and I work regularly on such projects.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: Story-driven, evocative, image-conveying.

  19. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  20. A: You can listen to it on my YouTube page, it’s called Amai: The Messenger of Life. It is the music for a video game cinematic which was recorded at Air Studios in London by a full orchestra of amazing musicians. Also, my pieces From Here to Eternity and Being, available on all platforms. They’re short, but full of meaning.

  21. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  22. A: Various film projects, an orchestral arrangement for a vocal artist to come out soon, and 2 single releases of my own.

  23. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  24. A: Martin Merenyi, great mixer.

  25. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  26. A: The best of both worlds. Why choose one?!

  27. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  28. A: To collaborate with other creators! Every new project pushes me to search inside for its appropriate sound universe. Finding that unique sound that perfectly complements the project is very rewarding and always makes me grow as a musician and artist. I t is also greatly rewarding to have another creator say to you: "You did it. That's exactly what I wanted!”. The product that comes out of this kind of collaboration is always something that I wouldn’t arrive at by myself. Each project gives me something new to ignite my creative process.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Film scores, video games, VR/XR, instrumental, hybrid orchestral. Also, I work on lots of song arrangements and productions ranging several genres from pop, to rock, Latin, world, EDM, classical, etc.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skill is my ability to communicate with you as a fellow creator in order to really understand what you want for your project. I also have also have a deep understanding and intuition for musical story telling and how to use all available musical colours, orchestral, synths, acoustic, sound design based, or otherwise, to tell the story and evoke the environments which you want your project to inhabit.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I bring to your song that cinematic sound that only a live orchestra and an appropriate arrangement can provide. I will help you tell your unique story in the unique way that it deserves.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: Thomas Newman, James Horner, Johann Johannsson, Alexandre Desplat …

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: I create music for film, video games, interactive installations, VR/XR… Anything visual that requires music to help the story and enhance the experience.
