Martin Chapman on SoundBetter

All-around DIY musician/producer. Guitar (since 2012), Electric Bass (since 2012), Drums (since 2014). Electronic Producer and Audio Engineer since 2017. UCSD Music Graduate 2019, KSDT Radio Audio Engineer. Winner of UCSD's 2018 Cheatham Prize for Outstanding Jazz Student. Genres: rock, jazz, R&B, electronic, folk

I am a producer, audio engineer, and multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles. I write, record, and produce my own music, which consists of both electronic compositions and live instrumentation. In addition to composing, I am also a skilled improviser, capable on guitar, bass, and drums. I played guitar in UCSD's student jazz ensemble from 2014-2019, where I wrote, arranged, and performed original compositions with the group, in addition to performing covers of standards and other modern jazz or R&B tunes. I have recorded and mixed music for other artists during my time as Audio Engineer for KSDT Radio at UCSD (recordings can be sent upon request).

I have diverse experience with many types of music on each of my instruments: rock (post-punk, math rock, psychedelic, noise rock), jazz (fusion, modal, standards), R&B (funk, soul), electronic (techno, house, footwork, hip-hop), folk (fingerstyle guitar).

I currently play in the post-punk indie band Typography, and I play as a sideman with R&B singer-songwriters Vilda Ray and TaRhea Ray.

My new song "Rust" is out now on streaming platforms. I wanted to develop and explore my synthesis and sound design techniques for this. It's different from most of my other music, but I feel like I took a similar approach in composing it - letting the song write itself as I progress, trying to make weird sounds and arrange them in a musical way.
