I own a recording studio on the hills of Tuscany, where I record drums for artists all around the world going through various genres. Interview with Giovanni Cilio
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I really love to use my API preamps on drums. They give the best response to transients and sound accuracy.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My goal is to make the client 100% satisfied about my work. That's what matters at the end of our collaboration.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have 3 main drums and mostly use a DS Drums Rebel Birch (22, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16). My main snares are: DS Drums Steel 13x7 and maple/mahogany 14x6,5, Ludwig Supraphonic 14x6,5, Tama Starphonic Steel 14x6, Tama Starclassic Bubinga 14x5,5. Mapex Black Panther 10x4 and 8x4, Yamaha Recording Custom birch 14x8. My mic setup is made of 13-15 microphones. I use API 3124V preamps and Antelope converters. Microphones: Royer Labs R121, 2x Lewitt 540 LC, 2x Sennheiser MD421, Rode K2, 3x Shure Sm57, Audix i5, SE electronics 2200 x2 (stereo room), Aston Spirit, 2x Oktava MK012, Audix d6, Shure Beta B91, AKG C451.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently working on my solo album and I'm recording for an Italian pop singer!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love interacting with new musicians and artists, knowing their visions, and being constantly inspired by them!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Quincy Jones for sure. Why? BECAUSE HE'S A LEGEND and he produced some of my favorite artists and songs.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Thanks to my background studies and my experiences with many artists in different genres, I offer my versatility to write the best arrangement options in every context!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started touring and recording with bands 8 years ago when I was 18. Made the first experiences with my bands (Upon This Dawning, 30 MILES and many more) and built my studio in 2016. Since then I worked with about 50 artists and bands all around the world (USA, Germany, Spain, Portugal, UK, Japan, South Africa, Morocco, Brasil, Argentina). I'm currently on tour with multiplatinum awarded singer GionnyScandal (Universal Music).
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Throughout the years I've had the pleasure to work with artists and bands in different genres such as the pop singer GionnyScandal (Universal Music), the metalcore band Upon This Dawning (Fearless Records/Artery Recordings), the fusion guitarist Davide Pepi, the indie-pop duo Danien&Theø (Sony Music). I'm really confident with many genres including Funk, Rock, Blues, Metal, Fusion, Progressive.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: That's my typical workflow: I receive the track minus drums (and the demo drums track if available) and, after understanding the client's desires and targets, I track the live drums in my studio. When the client is satisfied with the work I send the Raw files ready to mix.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I collaborate with artists and producers all around the world as a studio drummer and co-producer. I record professional live drums in my studio set in the hills of Tuscany, Italy.
