Interview with Leif Baker

Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently working on a very cool film about the philosophical concept of existence. The score is super dreamy and otherworldly. I’m super excited to share it when I finish it in the next couple weeks!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love learning and I love making people happy. I always ask my collaborators about their perspective and try to wrap my head around their dreams in order to make it happen. I’m always adapting and growing to suit everyone’s needs.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for people who are passionate about what they do. There are so many producers who say they’re good but they really are in it for a paycheck. You really want to work with people who have a drive and an eye for artistry. Those are the people who adapt to your wants and make big things happen.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill would be creating grooving bass lines and jazzy chord progressions in the span of like 10 minutes.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring harmonic nuance and perfectionist detailing to any song in a short period of time.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a highly accessible and productive workspace at my own home which I built. The room is acoustically treated and properly decorated for creative inspiration. It’s a fantastic place to make ideas come to life. If I need to record I know several studio owners with a lot of flexibility, so I could schedule something within a day or two of notice.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m really inspired by people like Flying Lotus who produces his own unique music and instrumentals for other hip-hop artists like Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, and Denzel Curry. The work he does would be the closest thing to the stuff I produce from hard hitting kick drums to jazzy harmonies and trippy samples.
