Dale Baker on SoundBetter

As a Grammy nominated, platinum selling, award winning drummer, I tour and record with Sixpence None the Richer, (that’s my drumming you hear on their hit singles "Kiss Me" "There She Goes", et.al.), work with developing and established independent artists, producers, singer-songwriters and bands spanning a variety of genres.

My playing on "Kiss Me" represents the understated and musical drumming that I strive to bring to all my sessions.

Kiss Me was #1 in over 11 countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and Israel and was RIAA certified Gold. In addition to it's ubiquitousness on radio, Kiss Me appears frequently as background music for sitcoms and soaps, movies, sketch comedy (Aziz Asnsari and Saturday Night Live), features prominently at sporting events ("Kiss Cam"), in commercials (NHL), and was played for over 200 million viewers at Prince Edward’s 1999 wedding. Billboard magazine reported "Kiss Me" as the #1 movie soundtrack single for 1999. Sixpence was named "#1 Breakthrough Artist" by Radio & Records (R&R) magazine and their self-titled album was RIAA certified Platinum and was twice nominated for a GRAMMY in 1998 and again in 1999.

Though I can't promise the same results for the tracks I record and produce for you, rest assured I will bring the same level of passion, dedication, years of experience, education (BM from UNT) and care to your project as I do with Sixpence and all the artists I collaborate with. Session drumming is my joy and passion and I've recorded with Buddy Miller, Emmylou Harris, American Aquarium, Mission House, Matt Maher, Big Star, Rebecca St. James, Plumb and many others over the years.

Dale very professional to work with. Very creative and musical and all I can say is he added a signature sound to the track. He added a complexity that was very simple and didn't take away from the song but made it original. Gave me lots of options and when I wanted something added he took care of it and was very quick about it.

I have worked with Dale on several projects. Dale is the consummate professional who has the magical ability to bring out the best in the people that he works worth. As a drummer, he delivers what the songs needs, not more, not less. His drumming is purposeful and supports what the song requires at that point. From the producing standpoint, Dale takes time to understand the song and what it is truly about and works to make sure that the production delivers that. Dale brings significant musical knowledge and experience to help craft a song that connects with the listener.

I have been privileged to work with Dale on many, many occasions over the past 20+ years. He has brought professionalism, creativity, artistry and a listening ear to so many songs and artist's work, including my own.
He is versatile, willing to try things, works with artists' budget and always brings a deep wealth of experience to any project.
I've had a number of artists well up with tears, or burst out with laughter in my studio after Dale finished a take, because, as they said, "You guys just made the song sound like something I have only ever heard in my head!"

Over my 20+ years as a professional musician, Dale Baker is one of the finest drummers/percussionists I’ve had the pleasure of working with. While his skill set, talent and musicality are all top-notch quality, it is his deep commitment to excellence in all aspects of a project that sets him apart. When I needed to hire for a percussion-heavy track that was a departure from my normal wheelhouse, calling Dale was a no-brainer and what he delivered was beyond what I could have hoped for. He is prompt, professional, and invested in whatever he sets his mind to. Highest recommendations!

I recently enlisted Dale's services for a record I'm working on. My producer recommended him and am I ever glad he did! Dale was the consummate professional. He's a great listener. I mean he REALLY listens to what the song is giving and finds interesting and unique approaches to delivering what the song needs. My material covers a pretty broad stylistic spectrum and Dale brought new and creative ideas to every song. It was truly a joy to watch a creative like Dale create. I found that he didn't need much prompting, but took (or asked for) direction well. He's also a nice guy and a solid hang!

Dale is one of the finest drummers I have ever had the pleasure to share the stage or studio with. He especially excels in knowing how to play drums and percussion in such a way to center the *song* and the performance of the band or singer/songwriter in question. In short, he is perhaps the most tasteful drummer I've ever worked with in 25+ years of performance and recording. He can do things many drummers can't, like follow acoustic guitars that aren't played perfectly. He is a consummate professional who consistently delivers top quality results on-time and on-budget. Dale rocks!

Dale's been first call for close to 15 years for drums and percussion - projects I have personally as a songwriter and artist and/or for the occasional project where I've been hired as a producer and have given a budget to help manage. It comes down to experience! Dale has done so much high level drumming in so many various situations that he always quickly gets to the ideas that work for the unique "space" -- room or situation. Dale co-produced my project Mind The Silverware, turning my strummy or fingerpicked acoustic guitar folk songs into SO much more! (Check out "Haunted" for an example)

Links to songs that exemplify the kind of drumming, vibe, and sound you are going for are extremely helpful to me when crafting the drum part for your project. My goal is to nail your vision, and serve the song. Reference material reduces the potential for costly re-takes and frustration. and always lead to a better drum part, and in turn a better song.
