TJ is an absolute star! I provided a type of sound and style that I was looking for in programmed drums, after a very short while he sent over EXACTLY what I was looking for AND played it on real drums, that’s both dedication and custom care! An awesome guy and great musician, will definitely hire again and so should you!

By far some of the best drum tones out there. TJ has spent so much time dialing in his room and gear that his drums are still to this day the best drums that I have ever had in my productions. Beyond that, his playing is A List, and he always knows exactly what I'm looking for on his first take. You can't beat it.

Interview with TJ Hartmann

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I have been providing remote drum tracks for about 10 years. I would love to own a stand alone, professional studio space in an entertainment city and do this full time.

  3. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  4. A: Engineering drums. It's easily become my favorite thing to do, to capture great drum tones.

  5. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  6. A: Energy. Drums are arguably one of the more important voices in any song or production and I always aim to give the right energy and approach to best serve the song.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Keep an open mind! Musicians can fall into a trap of holding on to certain sounds and setting with their gear, and sometimes when you throw all of those preferences out the window and experiment, the best ideas can happen.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Typically I'm playing on a lot of Pop and Pop Rock. I have also played on some heavier music, along with some country-pop as well.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: When I'm offered a chance to work with a client, the first thing I do is take detailed notes while doing my first few listens of the song. From there I'll do a bit of pre-production in getting my recording session setup in my DAW and mapping out what drums/cymbals/percussion I think would serve the song the best. Then it's time to get parts recorded and sending revisions back to the client. Once the client is satisfied with my contributions, final stems and a production mix are printed and submitted!

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: I'm based in Dayton, OH - currently working from my home studio. I have a simple 2-Room setup where I monitor/edit/mix and a separate room where my kit, preamps and other instruments are recorded. I'm very grateful to have access to gear that not only helps me sound the best that I can, but continuously inspires me to be creative.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: Drums, 100%! Most often, clients will approach me for studio quality drum tracks for their productions or even demos. One of my favorite parts about work like this is that you never really know where a client's track will take you. It's so much fun being inspired by other peoples work and having the privilege to share my creative input. I'm thankful to have worked with artists and producers from all over the world.
