Matt is eager to listen to your ideas and deliver what is demanded. He helped bring out the best and successfully add to the song with his keyboard playing. Would recommend.

Interview with Franz Matthews - MOWD Studio

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: Trust your instincts, and always have one lead element play at a time, the humain brain cannot focus on 2 ;)

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: My favorite music is electronic and groovy, from that point on, it can go into many styles and directions, but usually it's a mixture between electronic music, disco, a bit of french touch, a blend of organic elements and real instruments, very often danceful, but sometimes more melancholic too!

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: Having a global vision on a track in terms of what could be better in the arrangement, production, and trying to achieve that goal afterwards of course! I'm also good at composing full pieces, as I play several instruments (guitar, bass, voice, synths, keys and programming)

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: Depends on the task of course, but most important is listening to what the "client" needs, his musical references, to be able to stick closest to his expectations, while still bringing my own vision to it. If you listen to my music you will probably know if you think I'm the right person to bring my vision to your music :)

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: Getting some time to get accustomed to the track I'm going to work on is the primary and most important thing. Once I know every piece of the track I can start mixing and putting the pieces together. Usually I start working on the beat and bass first, making sure that the rhythm foundation is strong and tight, then it really depends on the song, but I will usually work on the lead parts and finally bring up the rest (pads, guitars, etc) and make it work around it to create depth and space.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: The studio is equipped to fit 1 to 3 persons and is well equipped with a panel of Synths (Prophet 08, Juno 106, Nord Stage, JX3P...), Guitars (Fender Telecaster & Jazzmaster, Jazz Bass), Mics (C214), Preamps (API 512c), Compressors (API 527), 2 pair of speakers (AX7+Sub7, NS10), all plugged onto Ableton/Pro Tools or Logic through a Fireface 400 Soundcard.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: Some my favorite artists/bands/producers : LCD Soundsystem, Zero 7, WhoMadeWho, Kindness, Chic, Tame Impala, Air, Paradis, Roosevelt, Lindstrom, Todd Terje, Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, Mulatu Astatke... Music production professionals : Zdar, Ken Scott, Bruce Swedien, Nile Rodgers, James Murphy, Andy Johns, George Massenburg, ... I try to stay open to as many genres & music production techniques as possible, but I'm definitely a big fan of blending the analog and digital world together, taking the best of these two worlds, as well as always keeping on learning and trying out new things, may it be in the punkiest way possible, it's always exciting to see how sounds blend together, and it's always different.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: Most commonly I help artists producing & mixing their music to get it to the next level. This involves recording guitars, analog synths, bass lines & drum machines through my beautiful API preamps and compressors, making everything sound neat and tight. A great part of my duties are also advising clients about what works and doesn't work with the track, how the arrangement can be improved, etc etc. The goal is simply to have you get the best experience and improvement with your tune when it comes out of the studio!
