Cody Fitzgerald on SoundBetter

I've composed, produced and played on everything from indie pop songs to orchestral Disney film scores. My music has been featured on NPR, in The New York Times and has been lauded by David Byrne of The Talking Heads, and I've scored multiple films from Cannes-featured dark shorts to romantic comedies starring Hugh Grant.

My background is originally in recording, composing and producing my own records under the name Stolen Jars, which have received a lot of praise from the press (NPR, NYT, Village Voice, Stereogum, Consequence of Sound, etc) and been featured in multiple films and an Apple commercial. I've played guitar since I was 10 and specialize in an indie pop, rhythmic style which you can hear on the Stolen Jars recordings.

Outside of that project I am also a trained film composer and am, with my film scoring partner, the youngest composer to ever score a Disney movie. I've worked on a number of features and shorts that run the gamut in genre and would be happy to help you find the right sound for the project you are working on.

I also love working on other people's records, including doing producing work on the soul-pop band Lawrence's most recent record and writing on a Glitch Mob song. Plus I have a hip-hop side project (which I don't rap on, don't worry) called Hi-Lo Jack, so I'm definitely open to different genres.

I would love to produce, compose, arrange, play guitar on, or mix your record. Just let me know what you are looking for and I'm sure we can find the right sound!

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

Cody is an all-together enjoyable person to work with, but perhaps one of his greatest professional strengths worth highlighting besides obvious musicality, exposure and understanding of various genres, professionalism and others is his sense of ownership through the process. Whatever your project is, he’ll make sure to give you a sense that it’s in safe hands and that his priority is to create a great product alongside you. He is also super fast & efficient! Love working with him & would again!

Cody was an incredible producer, musician, and mixing engineer. He was great to partner with & brought an immediate focus and elevation to the songs. He was able to quickly add instrumental layers & bring a unique depth to the arrangements while respecting the original structure & vision. He's extremely collaborative & works closely with you to bring out the best version of each song to life. Would 100% work with him again in the future and his command of music is extreme impressive - thanks!

Working with Cody it quickly becomes apparent just how talented he is. We’ll track vocals, guitar, etc. and almost immediately he'll fine tune them in a way that makes them sound professional. I've come to trust that Cody will put in the effort to learn my sound and then deliver upon my expectations. He's also a very talented musician in his own right, and helps me with certain instrumental parts when I'm unable to play them to the level needed. In short, he's been an incredible producer to work with !

Cody is an extraordinarily talented musician. composer, and producer. On top of that, he’s just an all around great presence to be around and have fun working on music with! He has the unique skill of being able to put you at ease (pretty rare to find in a producer!) and let the music come out.

He’s super down to earth, a genuine joy to be around and a true artist in his own right. Hope to continue working with Cody for years to come!!

Cody was fantastic to work with. He has a relaxed yet super focused creative vibe and high level technical skill. He provided direction for my song, he was decisive when needed, but he was first and foremost listening for what I wanted. Cody took my cues even when I was feeling tentative and leaned into what I was hearing, which was super helpful for my own learning process. I'm thrilled with the outcome and the experience helped me walk away with more confidence and clarity. I would work with Cody again in a heart beat!

Cody is ane of the most experienced producers I’ve ever worked with. He has
An incredible sense for how to take a song to the next level. He came up with tons of interesting ideas for my music that I hadn’t thought of and was open to exploring different avenues to give my songs texture, character, and fullness.

Cody’s an absolute pleasure to work with, so easygoing and attentive. Had so much fun, definitely going to continue working with him.

Interview with Cody Fitzgerald

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: I promise that we will find a sound for your song that you are excited about.

  3. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  4. A: If I could work with Bon Iver that would be amazing. Justin Vernon has this unreal way of building worlds out of his songs, I would love to be in a room with him and watch him do that.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: After you make something that sounds really really cool, always make sure to ask yourself "does this actually make the song better?"

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: I work on a ton of different types of music. A lot of indie rock stuff, but also a bunch of neo-soul, some hip-hop, and, through my scoring work, basically every genre under the sun.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: My strongest skill is translating what someone asks for into something they will love.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: Expertise, creativity, experience, and warmth - the biggest factor for me in production is "does this song feel warm and personal?", if it does then I've done my job.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: It really depends on the client's needs! At the end of the day, whatever we are making is not my music, it is the client's music, and so I try to do whatever it takes to make them feel the most excited about what they have made.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I have a Fender Strat, a full drum kit, a P-Bass, a Minilogue, and a million different sample libraries - I run everything through my Apollo Twin. I am confident that I can make any sound we need out of my space.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: I'm a huge fan of Bon Iver, Mitski, Sufjan Stevens, Elvis Costello, Dijon, the list goes on. I love working with artists to build their sound and to really make sure that each song feels like a world you are living in.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: My most common type of work is to take a song that a client comes in with (often just guitar and vocals) and make it a fully produced, mixed, and mastered track.
