Interview with Henry Charles
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I produced and mixed 3 songs on a debut album for a very talented artist recently that I believe will go on to big things, it's wonderful to be a part of their journey in these early stages and helping them grow
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m developing a new body of work under my own artist project while also producing for a few up-and-coming singer-songwriters. I’m exploring more lo-fi textures and emotional soundscapes that blend live instruments with atmospheric production.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I've worked with so many great people on here, Eko Centrik, Douglas Benson and Sara Barta just to name a few. Amazing communication and clarity about what they wanted to achieve with their music, and how I could help them bring their vision to life.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, for its flexibility, speed, and recallability. But I also need analogue elements in my workflow. I believe in the hybrid setup, I try to bring the warmth and unpredictability of analog into my digital workflow through creative sound design and mic techniques.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To treat your song like it’s my own. I’ll bring both professionalism and heart to the process, and I won’t stop until it feels right.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Helping someone feel seen through their music. There’s nothing better than sending a mix and hearing, “That’s exactly what I was trying to say.”
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: “Can you help bring my demo to life?” Absolutely that’s my specialty. I love turning voice notes or rough sketches into full songs that sound finished and emotionally resonant. "Can you sing in this key" - almost always the answer is yes, although very stylised, I have a very versatile voice
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it's all just plug-ins and presets. Good production or vocals come from care, nuance, and a deep understanding of the song’s emotional core.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What’s the story or emotion behind the track? What artists or references do you have in mind? What do you want people to feel when they hear this?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Find someone who listens as much as they create. Technical skill is important, but chemistry and communication will determine whether the song turns out how you imagined, or better.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My jazz guitar Earthworks SR40V - Built like a tank A MacBook with Logic Pro & Luna UAD Apollo Hologram Microcosm pedal for fun
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started as a performer playing venues like O2 Academy Islington and Latitude Festival before moving into production and songwriting. Over the years, I’ve expanded into studio work, collaborating with other artists and working in advertising for brands like Adidas, O2, and Jeep. I’ve been in the industry for over a decade now but last year I went back to study a masters in Creative Music Production to help develop my craft further. I love to learn everything I can about it
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Warm, intimate, and textured. I blend organic and digital elements to create productions that feel personal yet atmospheric. Vocally and lyrically, I aim for honesty but also technical precision.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Probably James Blake or Phoebe Bridgers. Artists who understand space, subtlety, and lyrical depth. Their music leaves room for feeling, and I think that aligns with the way I like to approach songs.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t overproduce too early. Let the emotion and structure of the song breathe before piling on layers. A strong vocal and a solid lead instrument can carry the track much further than you think. Everything else should support, not compete with it, in my opinion.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly singer-songwriter, indie pop, lo-fi, and alternative. I gravitate toward music that has heart, atmosphere, and an honest lyrical voice. But I’ve also worked across genres including quite a few EDM tracks and a lot of house music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Translating emotion into sound, whether that’s through lyric writing, vocal performance, or production choices. I’m also good at bridging the technical and creative sides, so artists feel both supported and heard.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Clarity of emotion, strong melodic instincts, and a producer's ear. I help artists tap into the story they want to tell, and I bring that story to life with tasteful production and emotive vocals. My goal is always to elevate the song’s impact while preserving its soul.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Depending on what the job is it usually starts with a conversation to understand the emotional core of the track. From there, I might lay down a piano or guitar bed, write or refine lyrics, and build out production layers. I like to iterate, sending roughs back and forth, so the final result feels right for the artist and true to the song’s essence. When it comes to recording vocals I usually like to record a first pass at the main chorus to then send to the client so we have the tone and delivery just the way we want, then I'll record the rest of the track from there.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I like to record and edit primarily in Logic Pro and then I always mix and master in Luna. I have a professionally acoustic treated home studio with professional class Adam Audio A8 monitors. I have a selection 9 different microphones from tube condenser, ribbons, dynamic mics, and 5 different guitars, a beautiful tube supro guitar amp, a range of pedals, keyboards, 4 channels of professional preamps - 2 focusrite ISA, and 2 Neve 5211's which I record all my vocals through. My space is designed for quick inspiration and clean recordings, whether I'm capturing vocals or building out full arrangements.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by producers like James Blake, Tim Bran, Mk.gee, Bruno Major, Tom Odell, Lianne La Havas and Fred Again just to name a few. Each brings a unique approach, Fred’s emotional energy and layering, Tim’s lush textures, and Mk.gee’s lo-fi grit and experimental edge. I also draw influence from singer-songwriters who blend intimacy with atmosphere like Bruno Major.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I primarily work as a vocalist, songwriter, and producer. I love helping artists develop their songs from rough demos into polished, emotionally resonant recordings. Whether it's crafting vocal top-lines, co-writing lyrics, or handling production from scratch, I focus on making each track feel authentic and sonically compelling.
