Interview with Martin Santagada

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: I Think My Jazzmaster, my Korg Sdd3000 Delay, my Roland JC 120, the Macbook Pro and my Mics. Can i include Some headphones too?

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I started studying classical music on guitar and then i discovered a lot of things that you can do with the music

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: Unpredictable.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: I`d love to work with Nubya garcía and David Byrne with both as a guitarist or co-composer.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: If you are in a creative labyrinth the exit is always above.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Im used to work around Afrobeat, Argentinian Music , experimental/ambient music, pop and sound art.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: I think sonic, harmonic and rhythmic work, with the instrument or through different DAWS.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: Freshness and Fire, if needed. Atmospheric and inmersive ambient sounds if asked to. Great guitar solos . Steady groove, unique sounds and creative harmonic work.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: First of all Listen Listen Listen Enjoy and embrace this new music, try to dance to it, to comprehend it then, if i`m working for or with someone, take time to really understand what I`m expected to do with it, and if it`s allowed, try to propose something new and unique. Then i start to improvise and record a couple of takes, and that`s when the pearl arrives. sometimes I need to be silent for a while before I play something new, every music job, performance or recording requires a different process i think. If it`s a Soundtrack job, i think there`s a little ritual needed to really dive into the film, in order to create something new and sympathetic with the images .

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: my main studio set up is my Macbook Pro, An M-audio Fastrack pro , my Roland JC 120 and an Audio Technica Condenser Mic. I have a Boutique pre-amp made exclusively in argentina by MAESE instruments, which I use mainly to boost or colour some signals . I use mainly Ableton live and Reaper to mold and shape the sounds if I need to, with some plugins and using different spaces of my house in order to use natural reverberation in my recordings. My Guitars are a Fender Jazzmaster Classic Player, a Washburn HB35 from the early 90s and a Esteban Gonzalez Boutique Classical Guitar.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: My main inspiration now a days is the whole AfroJazz Scene in london with the likes of Nubya Garcia, Oscar Jerome, Shirley Tetteh and jake long among others There are also some argentinian musicians and Composers like Lucio Balduini and Astor Piazzolla. After that there is a great contemporary composer called Diego Schissi who is focused in new tango and contemporary classical and academic music. In pop music, I`m into trap and some experimental/ambient music specially the buenos aires scene. There are a lot of crazy and wild artists out here.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: I play Mostly electrical and classical guitars, always proposing new ideas , sending two or more options, one "standard" and another with my own flavour if the client asks for it. If im needed for a music production job , i try mostly to listen and adapt myself to the needs and desires of my client.
