Ian Flynn on SoundBetter

I am a London based Irish producer, mix and mastering engineer. I have worked with numerous acts including MOSES, Hozier, and Rose Dive. My work has appeared on BBC Radio 1, Radio X, in the most recent Tomb Raider blockbuster and on numerous Spotify editorial playlists. I have a passion for audio and love working with new clients on their music.

I trained and first worked at Dublin’s Windmill Lane Studio for three years. I made the move to London in 2014 and have been working as a freelance producer and mix engineer here ever since. I have worked with numerous studios across Dublin and London (such as Konk, Sun Studio, Strongrooms, Unwound) and have been fortunate enough to work with some exceptionally talented artists. I now mix and master from my own mix room where I have a Pro Tools setup and multiple software bundles (UAD, Soundtoys, Fabfilter, Plugin Alliance, Sonnox, Valhalla and many more).

I offer mixing and mastering services that are tailored to suit each artist’s needs. I am determined for artists to be 100% proud of the final mix, by ensuring that artists are aware and involved in the decision-making process. The mix isn’t done until you are 100% satisfied I offer unlimited revisions and instrumental prints as part of the arranged fee. Stem printing is also available for an additional fee.

I am more than happy to send over more relevant examples of my work if needed.

Ian’s audio engineering knowledge is excellent and his ears finely tuned, resulting in dynamic, exciting, professional quality mixes. What truly sets Ian aside from the rest, though, are the qualities he brings to the job by being a super cool human being. Ian has a sixth sense for knowing what you want from your music better than you do yourself. Give him some obscure reference to what you’re after and he’ll intuitively know what you’re talking about and get it for you. Incredible patience and ability to coach musicians throughout the process and always goes the extra mile. Legend basically.

Ian is my go-to man when it comes to mixing/mastering, super speedy in the studio and has never failed to bring to to life whatever we throw at him. Fast delivery with mixes and always sees the process through until you’re happy with them!

I have been recorded and produced by Ian in a few drumming sessions and i have to say that everything went super smooth and the raw sound we got was already exceptional.
The knowledge of him understanding musical language is such an important thing. I have been recorded a few times by producers who dont and trust me, it brings them down.
The speed he works with the program is surprising! The understanding of what you want to achieve and the input he gives is really really good and very helpful. Great ears! Great guy!

We looooooove Ian to bits. He is patient with us and keeps it professional. After working with us on on our last 3 projects, he has delivered amazing results in record time and is nothing but a pleasure to hang around with too. Incredible producer and mix engineer. Some say he is the master of mastering. All around top dude. I doubt he'll shake us anytime soon.

I've recorded 6 tracks with Ian, and it's about the most fun I've had. He's a savant with the constructive process and knows his way around different genres and sounds, which really helped us to craft something more refined and unique.

If you're picky and want perfection, he will patiently help you get it. Ian has a very good ear for tonal/rhythmic faults, but everything is done with efficiency and ease. Honest, supportive, clear and quick to deliver. Good at mediation as well (everyone knows what bands are like).

Ian's a keeper - buy him apples and coffee.

Working with Ian was fantastic. He is an attentive listener and gets to the bottom of what you want, helping you bring your vision to life in the way you intend it to. He is detail-oriented yet efficient, gives excellent constructive feedback, and on top of that is also fun to work with. I look forward to working again with him in the future!

My band and I have worked with Ian on a number of projects. He has been nothing but professional from start to finish - always super efficient and communicative, and also such a fantastic creative input. He will always go to extra mile to get it right, and will prioritise getting the best out of the track above all else. He creates such a great working environment and puts everyone at ease. We will also put the work in up front to understand exactly what will work best for the project. Can't recommend Ian enough.

Ian has a penchant for genuine graft fused with an eclectic open mind and innate musicality. He cuts no corners! He pushes hard when the artist and song demands it, but also encourages and appropriately massages the act's ego when required thus striking the right balance. 5 stars baby!

Ian goes above and beyond for every project i have worked with him on.
He understands what I am trying to achieve and gets me across the line every time. He is incredibly patient with the more troublesome musicians, and knows how to get the best out of people, plus isn't afraid to give criticism to get even more out of you. He has helped me to get vocal takes i am actually happy with.
He helps to build your sound, chips in good ideas, a good selection of pedals and makes you often think outside of the box.
An incredible chap and wouldn't want to work with anyone else going forward.

We have worked on two Ep's with Ian and nothing but positives.

A true professional who not only has full mastery of the complexities of production and mixing but a great ear and deep understanding of the mechanics of music.

Always reliable and delivers on time...every time.

Above all, and one of the biggest reasons why we consistently find ourselves in the Studio with Ian, is his ability to communicate and get the best out of us. Not only individually but as a unit.

He also really likes apples, which i guess is a good thing!

I've had the pleasure of working with Ian Flynn for a number of years, across multiple music projects. I always keep coming back to Ian, and I have recommended him to plenty in the music industry who have gone on to enjoy successful relationships with him too.

Ian is straightforward in his approach. He knows his stuff inside out, and will work with you to get what you want. He is super-prompt, and the most reliable man in music. Everything is done to a high standard, ahead of schedule.

On top of that, Ian is a great communicator who understands the often touchy dynamics of music.

Ian has produced some excellent work over the years I’ve known him, across a wide variety of genres. He is reliable, extremely knowledgeable with the mixing desk and his understanding of musical theory, he will always listen to the artists ideas and strives to bring the best out of you. This is speaking from experience of having working with Ian for the past 7 years. I’d highly recommend!

Interview with Ian Flynn

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: A mixture of both. For mixing the control and ease of recall makes digital hard to argue with but there is a depth I find you get when you take certain elements out of the box. I like to use a mixture of the best of both worlds.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: Working with great artists on great music.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: That there is a magic piece of equipment or a trick that makes a good mix. A great mix comes from having a great song, great recording and an experienced mix engineer.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: What is the message behind the song and what is the aesthetic they have in mind. Do they have any reference tracks or acts that they have been inspired by during the production. The more information I have the better the final result.

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Always have a detailed discussion with them before the project and let them know where you are coming from with the song and what you want to get out of it. The more information you give the better the final result will be.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: Pro Tools, my speakers, Sennheiser HD650's, Tonkonig drive pedal and UA Apollo Twin

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I trained and first worked at Dublin’s Windmill Lane Studio for three years. My work has appeared on BBC Radio 1, Radio X, in the most recent Tomb Raider blockbuster and on numerous Spotify editorial playlists.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: I would love to work with Phoenix. I have always been a fan of theirs and love the way they use melody in their music.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Make sure that at each stage (arrangement, recording, mixing) the track is as strong as it can be.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: I like to work on as many musical styles as possible but have mainly been working on rock, indie and electronic music of late.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: My attention to detail and my desire to get the most out of every project I work on.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: When working on a mix I like to have a detailed discussion with the artist about their vision of the song and the meaning and feeling they are trying to get across with it. This gives me a better idea of where to take the mix and how to approach it sonically. I then import the files into Pro Tools and start working towards the first pass which I will send to the artist. I will then have a discussion with the artist about the mix and make any changes or tweaks that they require. When mastering a track I will first listen to the mix and discuss the track and any technical issues there may be with the mix with the artist. After that I will complete the first pass and send it to the artist and then make any changes they may require.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I generally mix from my own mix room where I have a Pro Tools system with a number of software bundles (Soundtoys, Valhalla, Sonnox etc). I also have some outboard gear and a number of hardware synths and effects pedals that I use when mixing.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: I have always been inspired by the work of Philippe Zdar and David Wrench. Their use of space and depth in a mix has always been something I look to achieve in my work

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: I generally work as a producer and mix and mastering engineer.
