Servellen Music on SoundBetter

This boutique mastering service leverages a carefully designed hybrid digital-analog signal path with high-end converters and sweet hardware to bring the harmonics and vibe of your music to life, and ready for commercial release. Get in touch with me, Sander van Servellen, to kick off the service.

With 20 years experience producing electronic dance music, it is fair to say I'm specialised in electronic genres but now more broadly active. Having worked with hundreds of artists while managing Cytopia Records label in Amsterdam, I know what it takes to get music ready for release.

Why choose this service? The sweet selection of analog hardware units really opens doors in terms of vibe, colour and harmonics. Find out for yourself. We're doing this for the passion and love for music, and price it fairly. You only pay once satisfied with the result. Our service caters to a small network of clients, for whom we can take the time to understand needs, consult on the mix, and deliver excellent results.

Mastered files can be delivered in 16BIT or 24BIT wave files with optional addition of compressed formats like MP3. Loudness can be discussed as some prefer one level for all platforms while others prefer dynamic versions for streaming in addition to louder one for playing live and distributing to DJs/Beatport etc. If there is a reason to deliver higher sample rates, that's certainly possible, we're flexible.

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

Servellen Music excels at mastering using top-notch outboard equipment. The quality of the analog gear he uses is evident in the sound, adding a unique touch that digital plugins can't replicate. I highly recommend him! Having worked with over a dozen mastering engineers for different labels, I can confidently say he has delivered the best masters I ever heard of my music. My go to ME from here on out!

Interview with Servellen Music

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: I use a hybrid signal path that combines high-end analog gear and converters with selected software in an acoustically treated studio with high-end point source Genelec monitors and subwoofer with GLM. The Crane Song Solaris DAC sends signal to my analog hardware chain which can include any of the following: Neve 542 tape emulators for saturation, Wes audio Prometheus for pultec style equalisation, Wes audio Rhea for vari-mu tube compression, Manley Massive Passive, for really high end equalisation and tone, Neve Portico Master Bus Processor MKII for compression and stereo/depth adjustment and Bettermaker Master Limiter for clipping and limiting. That signal comes back into the box via a BURL B2 Bomber ADC or Crane Song Interstellar ADC (depending on what's needed). The Burl has a transformer before the converter that adds harmonics, while the Interstellar is more clean and punchy. Am using selected software plugins before and after the analog stage, mostly UAD, Fabfilter, TC Electronics. Slate VSX headphone are used as additional way of monitoring sound in different modelled environments.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: This mastering service is based on a deep love for music and passion for art of production and mastering, with an added appreciation of the impact analog gear can bring in terms of harmonics. I've recently built a boutique studio and that allowed me to finally launch this service. Having produced electronic music for around 20 years and managed a label in Amsterdam, I’ve released music for hundreds of artists, in parallel to a career developing analytical solutions for academia. I was lucky to find more than one passion in life. This new service aims to serve a small network of clients, for whom we can take the time to understand needs, consult on the mix, and deliver excellent results.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: I’m on the tail end of building my boutique studio, and now finally focussing more on producing and mastering, as intended.

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: Andres Klein for mastering Techno.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Both! Digital for precision and easy recall, and analog for natural saturation and harmonics created by the beautiful circuits and transformers, that are not well emulated digitally.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: What exactly are they trying to achieve, and whether they have reference tracks they LOVE.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: Harmonic

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: Giorgia Anguili because she is original and so creative in her style.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Create a good listening environment i.e. acoustic treatment and good monitors, or at the least very good headphones, otherwise nothing you do translates well to other situations and it is near impossible to get the mix right.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Good taste ;)

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: Fresh ears, passion for music, and boutique analog gear to give some extra love.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: First understand client aims and wishes, and listen to the mix-down carefully, before setting up a bespoke mastering chain, step by step and checking the results compared to selected reference tracks, on different monitors, speakers, headphones, before sending the client a first sample, once I am happy with the sound.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: My musical tastes are incredibly diverse. I love Giorgia Anguili, Jan Blomqvist, Simon Posford for their creative original electronic music. I'm always impressed with Rick Rubin as a producer both in terms of result and vision. As a teen especially I was inspired by the late Randy Rhoads, who played guitar on Ozzy Osbourne's Blizzard of Oz and Diary of a Madman albums. Currently Buckethead intrigues me with songs like Soothsayer.
