Interview with Nigel Dean - Phaser Control

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: A project that has been one of my favorites has been with the Cold War Kids. I've been a big fan of them growing up and to work with them was absolutely surreal. I was a recording engineer and co-mixing engineer.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Honestly? I love both and believe that they both have their utility. I lean one way as opposed to another depending on the environment and the song.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: That I will work on their project as if it were my own.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: That I get to work within my passion.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: The best way to send me their songs. My answer depends on the service provided.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: That it's easy and I can fix everything.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: How the song was recorded, what DAW, where, bit and sample rate, etc. What is your vision for the project?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Make sure your track sounds relatively solid, to begin with. Ask yourself..."Does it sound muddy?" "Did I select the right sounds?" "Does it sound thin?" Always be asking yourself questions. As the saying goes....a polished turd is still a turd :)

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Guitar, Laptop, Speakers, Audio Interface, MIDI Controller.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I have been doing this for over 6+ years. I started as an intern and worked my way up!

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Contemporary and strategic.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: Anderson .Paak. I absolutely love his sound and energy. A truly unique individual.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: Always rely on your ears.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: I work mostly with indie, pop, EDM, and hip-hop but, I have also gained experience doing jazz, rock, voice-overs, and other fun projects.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: Listening.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I provide the attention to detail you are looking for. The polish you need. The thickness you want. As an individual who strives to achieve as close to perfection as possible, I provide a 100 percent guarantee that your song will be optimized for worldwide distribution.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: Phaser Control offers the only recording room of its kind built on the west coast and can offer this unique room at rates that better than almost any other professional-grade recording studio in California. Phaser Control Recording Studio was completed in 2012. It was conceived by musicians and designed by renowned studio Designer Rod Gervais. The goal was simple: build a recording facility that can capture all the warmth, tone, and nuance of whatever sounds are produced in it. That goal was realized (and then some) through the advanced construction principles of Rod's design. In today's digitally dominated recording world, real room recording sounds are becoming obsolete. Replaced instead by libraries upon libraries of previously recorded sounds. It's these "real room" sounds that in our opinion, make the best sounding records such as many of the albums recorded before the advent of the digital recording medium. At Phaser Control, we seamlessly blend the principles of the classic A room studio recording with an ultra-modern design and the best in digital capabilities. Artistic integrity is our motto. We want your project to not only reflect your art to its fullest potential but also to reflect our passion for recording and our commitment to getting your project to sound the best it possibly can. Our custom-designed recording room and state-of-the-art recording tools in conjunction with our vast array of dynamic microphones, pre amps, and selection of vintage amps, guitars, basses, keyboards, synths, and drum sets gives you the tools and options to make the recording you've envisioned.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: Patrick Heaney, Matthew Bellamy, and Quincy Jones.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: I mostly do mixing and mastering work, though I also do recording and music production.
