Jon Shuemaker on SoundBetter

An experienced multi-instrumentalist on Guitar, Bass, Piano, Drums, Hand Percussion and Vocals. I provide my services for commercial use in film, video games, or other mediums. I write a large volume which I feel can really help a client really pinpoint the sound or emotion and further develop it.

I would like to work with like-minded, professional individuals and creatives. I offer my musical services to any one needing music as an accompaniment to their projects. I personally feel my musical approach is very fitting for film or game development. I am confident in my ability to write very symphonic, synth-based, or even percussion ensembles. I specialize in World/New Age, Orchestral music, Rock/Metal, and Electronic. I feel my well rounded nature in my personal music could spark new imagination in any production whether big or small scale. I write large quantities when inspiration strikes and I feel that would be ideal in these pretenses as it would give you a catalog written specifically for your endeavor. Top notch creativity and hits the mark every time. Matches the exact sound I've asked for on each track I have worked with him on.

Interview with Jon Shuemaker

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I have two that I really enjoyed doing so far. 1. I self-designed a few Unity video games 2D and 3D. The coding wasn't fun and I was out of my element. But I composed several tracks in my portfolio for it. 2. I did a session for an artist in Virginia Beach on percussion. Many layers. Wrote it out before recorded performance in the external studio. Everything was refined and I knocked all the many layers out in under an hour. Why I was proud was it was with under 2 takes per drum. The client was ecstatic with the end result. I saved them an arm and a leg in studio costs!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm working up live drums for a musician's solo album currently. Over 20 track ideas. All may not be used for his endeavor.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: I run digital on most of my equipment. I know of external studios to do more analog capabilities. Both have their place!

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I will aim to meet your deadline!

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: The Music. Writing it. Expanding my musical vocabulary/range.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Q:How soon can you compose this? A: Same day - 3 business days Q: Can I externally send this for mixing and mastering elsewhere? A: Yes, I'd prefer you'd look into professional mixing/mastering of my compositions. I'm merely an artist. I don't handle mastering it takes a special ear I find. Q:Why so cheap rates? A: I am starting from the ground up, I have done sessions before. Although I'm looking to build a more concrete resume.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That its all play and no work.. It's a difficult thing to sonically paint a clients vision and bring their dream to life. Communication and details are key!

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: -What is the overall vision or sound of interest for your project? -Is there any examples of what you're looking for? -Can I send my ideas for your project to you same day?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: I've had a few sessions under my belt. But I feel my rates are modest. Considering all that, I believe I would need a customer to be understanding I don't have a prolific resume. I'm looking to build one in helping you with my services.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Well considering there are commodities like electricity on that island.. 1.Computer w/DAW 2.Novation synthesizer 3.My Roland TD-12 set 4. Hand drums/Percussion set 5. Drum Sticks!!

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I originally worked in Veterinary field for the last 9 years. I was always pursuing music during my time in that field. I am aiming to make composing a primary directive.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Eclectic. Versatile.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Buckethead. I love his extensive catalog. His spirit and energy. The guy loves to write music!

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: I play my drums and piano parts over programming them. It sounds more natural.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Rock/Metal, Electronic, New Age/World, Contemporary Classical in a nutshell. Sometimes I get wild and play experimental sounds. But only if the client wishes.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: The ability to meet deadlines.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: A signature sound. Unique in nature. Lots of percussive elements even on stringed instruments and piano.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I, myself like to write large quantities of music. I enjoy creating so much it doesn't feel like a task. I love what I do. Typically session multiple scratch tracks then refine them to the clients preference.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I have a modest setup at best. But I believe I can accommodate majority of sounds you are looking for. I use electronic drums for live drum tracks.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: -Buckethead. The guy is a powerhouse of music. -Danny Elfman. Creative mastermind all around. -Cirque Du Soleil composers. I love most of their productions!

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Compositional services.

Brand new full length album. Been working on it for awhile. It is a collaborative effort of sorts between Progressive Rock/Metal guitarist Patrick Taylor Phillips and myself. As well, features some Moog and Theremin playing by Derek Sherinian (Planet X, Dream Theater, Sons of Apollo).
