Interview with Jacob Justus

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My favorite track I’ve worked on is a live rock track that has an immeasurable amount of talent from my band I performed about a year ago.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently I am working on a couple video game tracks that are mainly composed of Orchestra components.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: I think there is a sweet spot between analog and Digital. When you have authenticity with digital you usually access a unique quality that sounds more pleasant than just using one or the other.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: My promise to any client is a quality track, which can be a painful reality because I do not settle for a descent sounding track but push everything to its limits and find the perfect sound for the song.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: The creative aspect and that you can make music that no one has ever heard before.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: The question I get the most from my customers is what would fit the track the best? My response varies according to the track I’m working on?

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: Just because something sounds good in a track doesn’t mean you should settle for that I think you can always push a track to a point where you know that it has reached its summit.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: The First Question I always ask is what is your goal making this track. What emotion do you want to portray and what’s the number one thing you want to hi light in the track?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Don’t limit yourself to anything in music, if there’s an opportunity knocking go for it and just get better everyday because consistency is key.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: My MacBook, an analog Synthesizers which I could also use as a midi keyboard, Sony Headphones, an Apollo Audio Inteface and a tube Microphone.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: The artist I would most like to work with is Probably Nick Miller (The artist ILLENIUM). The reason for this is because I just enjoy the attitude he gives off while he’s producing music and approaches it without limitations but just creates authentic music that can emphasize with different stories.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: I think Music is a universal language that portrays emotion, and the number one goal in any song is to share what you’re feeling as clear as possible in a song But you must also know when to hold back in a song to demonstrate that emotion the best way possible.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: My favorite Genre to work on is Alternative because of its variety in style. I do not like to limit myself to a specific song genre and also work on Jazz, Orchestral, Ambient, Pop and Rock.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skill set is the ability to add unique sounds to a song, this probably my favorite part of producing a song is the sound design aspect and absolutely love investing time in making the song unique in that aspect but extremely pleasant to listen to.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I usually bring the cutting edge to a song instrumental wise, or organize the rhythm of a song that really fits its personality. The thing I’ve mastered the most is knowing what to add in a song because sometimes less is more or sometimes you must layer a song with unique sounds.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I usually begin a song with Basic Chord progression that fit the specific Style I’m aiming for, I am very advanced in music Theory from my Classical And Jazz background and can usually make the specific style I or the customer wants.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I have different range of experiences, my home instrument is keyboard (Synthesizers, Wurlitzer’s, Organ, Melodic Percussion, and Any and every variety of piano Sound) and I add live keyboard tracks to any song I work on. I can also add any other instrument to a track and it will sound live but i will just be placing midi notes and fine tune editing the sound to give it a live effect. I perform and mixed for various churches live and have worked on many tracks personally and professionally.
