Interview with Mikael Pessi

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Digital, I just don't have so much experience with analog yet. And I want to be honest about it.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: I try to understand what my client wants. I ask questions to make sure I can provide them just what they need.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: Jacob Collier. He is such a creative person.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I dedicate my skills and attention fully to your project.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Learn from others but sound like yourself.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Curiosity for creating. Not feeling boundaries or "rules".

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: It is sometimes hard to describe my style. I don't feel I have any boundaries. Everything I make I try to make it sound as good as it can.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: I always try to fulfill my clients' need. When I'm composing or arranging I usually start by improvising. I try to create and keep a fresh approach to music.

  17. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  18. A: I'm working on my clients' projects and also on my own artist projects.

  19. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  20. A: Bringing something unusual to current contemporary and pop music.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: Quincy Jones, Charlie Puth, Jordi Savall, Patrice Rushen, Christina Pluhar, Greg Kurstin

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: I record and arrange tracks for other musicians/producers.

  25. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  26. A: Double manual German harpsichord after Mietke, Fender Rhodes, Bösendorfer grand piano, my laptop and power supply.

  27. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  28. A: As a kid I started with classical piano. Soon later I found that odd instrument with color-reversed keys. From the very first moment I thought that this instrument rocks! Since then I have played both early keyboards and pop piano/synths alongside each other. Later, I also studied both subjects. In early music I was always fascinated by the idea of finding, being an archeologist of music, revealing something that has been hidden for centuries, or even thousands of years. Digging lost stories out of dust that have been waiting to be retold. At the same time I played piano and synths in bands and wrote & produced songs for myself and other musicians.

  29. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  30. A: iMac - FL Studio & Logic Pro X.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Either on early music or pop music production.
