If you want to work with an extremely multi-talented producer then look no further. AJ is not only a creative genius but is extremely professional and knowledgeable. His wide scope of expertise allowed us to explore various musical genres. He was able to assist in the full process from writing lyrics to beat making and even playing live instruments. I am really looking forward to working with AJ again.

AJ is incredible! He worked closely with me to find the sound and direction I was looking for and then created the exact production I wanted. He is a very skilled songwriter, producer and mixer and I highly recommend him!

Interview with AJ Johnson

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: One of the coolest pieces of gear is the Eventide Harmonizer. Although the hardware version is expensive and rare, there is a plugin by Sound Toys called Microshift that copies it quite well. It can be used to widen vocals, guitars - anything you can think of, and it always sounds great in a mix!

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: I work on all different kinds of music, but typically I work on pop and alternative projects.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: My strongest skills are my attention to detail, strong work ethic and limitless passion for music.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: I bring experience as a trained producer and multi instrumentalist with years of experience working in the biggest recording studios. I am not satisfied until my client is 100 percent satisfied with the final product.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: Typically I start by going over the project with the client and outlining what they hope to achieve. I then start working on a rough draft of the production and work together with the client to tailor it perfectly to their taste. We then record any live vocals or instruments that they wish to add and finalize their song in the mixing and mastering process.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: I have an acoustically designed recording studio with a vocal booth and custom iMac. It has a full drum kit, several guitar amps and selection of vintage gear.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: I am inspired by so many producers and musicians. Right now a few of my favorite producers are Greg Kurstin, Jeff Bhasker and Max Martin. At the moment, a few of my favorite musicians are Kevin Parker (of Tame Impala), Adele, and Harry Styles.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: Although I specialize in indie and pop music, I have worked with clients from all different genres and backgrounds. I start by speaking with the client and outlining the production and writing work that they want completed, and then we work closely together to produce a great song. At the end of production the mixing and mastering is typically turned to my partner Nicolas Essig, who finalizes the mix and marks it ready for release. If a client is interested in album artwork or video/graphics for their work we can create and release those as well.
