Alex Dezen on SoundBetter

Multi-platinum selling songwriter, producer, and mixer of rock, pop, punk, folk, and all that’s in between. We can start at the basic song level and build out, take your existing track and beef it up with some incredible sounds, or mix whatever you got!

Let's make the record of your dreams. My name is Alex Dezen. I have been the lead singer and songwriter for the alt-rock/Americana band The Damnwells for 16+ years as well as the songwriter/guitarist for punkers Broken Baby. As a songwriter and producer, I’ve had the honor of working with many of artists over the years, including Dave Grohl, Justin Bieber, The Dixie Chicks, and others. My studio is fully-stocked multitrack UAD system (Apollo Twin X with UAD-2 quad core Satellite), with hundreds of incredible plugins (including a new suite of incredible tools from the good people at IZotope), plenty of both vintage and new amazing guitars, one part-time really nice dog and one full-time mean one, and some beautiful tube amps from Jaguar, Fender, Peavy, and Marshall (which are now all housed in a nice little amp room we built, leaving more room for humans in the control room!). Whatever your project calls for, whether it be epic soundscapes, stripped-down Americana, garage-y rock/punk, modern rock, orchestrated baroque pop or anything in between, I’m your dude.

Tell me about your project and how I can help, through the 'Contact' button above.

Alex is fantastic! Very knowledgeable and talented. Plus he gave great advice and was open to implementing my various ideas. He also replied in a very timely fashion. He took my demo and turned it into the radio ready song I had envisioned. Would definitely work with again!

Alex was referred to me by Brian Griffin, who had laid down some drum tracks on a song I had written. Alex took the song to a whole new level - as if the song I have him was the skeleton yet he made it into a living being. Very skilled with good taste and very pleased and grateful for his work.

Alex has a very strong creative streak and did some great work on a number of tracks. Some simple additions were enough to really change and improve the character of the song. Thanks, Alex!

Talk about a one stop shop! Alex is so good at so many things. He is one of the best songwriters on the planet, he plays pretty much everything, he is a fountain of creative ideas and when it's all on tape, he'll pull everything together in a beautiful mix that leaves nothing on the table. Hire this man if you have music in you that needs to come out.

I have worked remotely with Alex on five tracks and they all turned out way better than I could have imagined! The effort, focus, and care that Alex puts into each project truly empowered me as an artist. From the very first step of each project, Alex struck a great balance of keeping my vision for the songs and challenging me as a songwriter. I highly recommend working with Alex, and I look forward to working on more songs with him in the future!

It took me four years of searching but I finally found my favorite producer in LA. When I reached out to Alex about making my record he replied with genuine interest and excitement. I could tell I was not just another paycheck to him. He helped develop and grow my music into something I am extremely proud of. His pricing is excellent and worth every penny. I can't wait to work with him again on my future projects.

Alex mixed all 9 tracks on my latest record. He brought depth and focus to the mixes in a way I would never have been able to achieve on my own. As a result, this record is the best-sounding thing I've ever released. Alex always approaches everything from a songwriter's perspective. He's not looking to change everything or impose his process on you, he wants to help you do your thing and make cool music. He blends that with a healthy dose of technical expertise, his own real-world music industry experience, and a sense of humor that makes him easy to work with.

Alex has produced and mixed multiple tracks for me and we have co-written an album's worth of songs together. He's incredible and versatile collaborator with an endless wellspring of inspiration. Every idea I've ever brought him has come back sounding better and stronger. Hiring this man is a can't lose proposition.

What does Alex bring to the table? What doesn't he bring to the table... Alex produced a summer single for me in 2021, which not-coincidentally, is my most streamed song. He was there from inception, taking my acoustic scratch demo and helping to flesh the idea out- and then executing his ideas perfectly. On top of ideas, his abilities as a musician are second to none.. nothing more than what the song needs, and nothing less. I wish I had a nickel for everyone who asked who is playing the guitar lead on "Gonna Listen"- I'd have a lot more than the streaming income from the song ;)

Interview with Alex Dezen

  1. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  2. A: All types! I guess my preference is working with people who are passionate. It’s inspiring to me. You can’t fake that.

  3. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  4. A: Communication. Utter lack of ego. Compassion. And dedication. I just don’t stop working.

  5. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  6. A: My goal is always to elevate the heart of a song. As a songwriter and artist myself, I’m constantly trying to find the fundamental of an idea or feeling and bring that to the emotional center. And I love going through the process of discovery with an artist, and finding that “truth.” I like it more than being an artist myself.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: Far too many guitars. UAD platform with more plug-ins than I can ever use. I got rid of all my outboard gear few years back, and just use an old ART limiter for tracking that I’ve had forever and really love. Sometimes the cheap stuff just wins. I have a KSM44 for that wide and clear condenser sound, and a SM7B for the in-your-face heft. A matched pair of SM81s for the pinpoint stuff. Some 57s.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: Anyone who elevates the artist, really. Jon Kaplan, another mentor, has this amazing ability to chase down any feel, vibe or sound. The guy is like a sonic medium. His passion inspires me. I never want to forget that when I’m working with an artist.

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: A lot of what I do is working with an artist from the ground up. Starting with an idea—maybe even a demo—finding the heart of it, and building out from there. It’s really important to me that an artist has the space to dig around in the dirt and explore. Sometimes there’s a bigger, better song buried in there. As a mixing engineer, I take a similar approach—finding the fundamental of a song and bringing that to the front. As my mentor Jim Scott once told me, “I turn down the stuff that sounds bad and turn up the stuff that sounds good.” It’s really all about clearing the lane for the truth of the song to be heard.
