Patrick is a great collaborator, multi-talented, and a joy to work with. He brings a fresh perspective and an impressive amount of knowledge to the table.

I’ve had the chance to work with him on several occasions, he always delivers. Whether it’s something small or a larger project, he brings great ideas and an open-mind to each and every one—willingly accepting feedback and providing it when needed.

I wouldn’t hesitate to bring him on for any of my projects!

Interview with Straight White Teeth

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: Strive to get great takes from the get go, because fixing mistakes is an awful way to spend your time as a producer.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: Indie folk mainly at the moment, but I'm expanding into all sorts of different alternative music styles. I'm never going to stick to doing just one thing.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: Tenacity. Without it, I would've given up music in my early twenties.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: I try to bring the most honest version of myself that I can while remembering that other people are (hopefully) going to hear this thing. It's not entirely for me, and it's not entirely for anyone else either. It's a weird balance. I try to make the sort of music that would catch me off guard no matter what I was doing; stuff I couldn't ignore whether it's a brutally honest lyric or melody you want to hear again and again.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: I know I can't sound perfect, so I try to sound distinct instead. I typically begin on the piano or with my acoustic guitar and typically build tracks in Logic as I write. So, I essentially produce as I go from the very beginning. I match lyrical ideas and phrasing to the music I'm working on, and more often than not a song emerges.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: I work pretty minimally. I have a Sure SM7B vocal mic, a nice Taylor acoustic guitar I've been writing and recording with since I was 18, and Logic for my DAW. I recently started adding live bass and drums into my songs, so that's been fun and challenging. I also write and record with an upright piano.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: I love singers who can't sing very well but write such impactful music that their flaws get flipped and turn into strengths: Lou Reed, Daniel Johnston, etc.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: I'm really lucky in the fact that clients mostly hire me to create original music for them. It's the thing in life I most love doing. I'm typically hired to do everything up until a song is mastered: writing, performing, recording, and producing.
