Interview with Will Jordan

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The day I found out I was gonna be a father, I was going to put music on hold and go back to my warehouse job. My daughter’s mother told me to give it three months. Three months later a song I wrote called “Fly” by Nicki Minaj feat. Rihanna ended up on her album and went triple platinum. By the time my daughter was born, we had everything we needed.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m working on completing an album, touring, and thriving in Los Angeles.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Analogue. The warmth and the color.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: My promises to my clients are two things that you rarely encounter in the music business; punctuality, and precision.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I don’t look at it as a job, but my favorite thing about creating is being able to help people to heal, connect, and feel through music. A lot of us walk around with our guards up, but a good song gives you a chance to let your guard down.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: They ask what effects I use in my vocals, and I tell them, “ Heartbreak, misery, eq, and compression.”

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: I think people think writing pop music is easy, but it’s really about saying as much as you can with as few words as possible.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: I like to figure out where they want to go, and I also do my best to teach about the techniques I use and the ways they can use them too.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: The more examples you can give me of what you’re looking for, the better. Share any and everything that inspires you. From the color in a sunset, to the sounds you hear in the kitchen of a three Michelin star restaurant. It’s all music to me

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I grew up playing, singing, and writing songs in church, school, and local bands. I wrote my first Multi Platinum record at 21, and have been a full time creative ever since, I’ve been a professional for about 12 years and a creative for about 22.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: I would describe my style as adventurous, theatrical, moody, and cinematic. If you close your eyes and listen to music and the song doesn’t take you somewhere, then it isn’t finished.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: Jay Z. Because he’s a Genius.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: K.I.S.S. “Keep it simple, stupid.”

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: My favorites to work on are Rnb, pop, hip hop, and soul music.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: My ear. I believe that your ears are like your eyes in the music business. Since I was a child I’ve always been great at capturing and recreating sounds, ideas, places, and feelings and turning them into sounds.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: Coming from a blended back ground in Gospel, Rnb, Hip hop, and pop music; I bring emotion, connection, storytelling and pop sensibility to a song.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: I spend a good amount of time searching for inspiration and taking notes so that when it’s time to work I’m always prepared. I’m also very particular about and protective of my voice because you never know when you’re gonna need to sing on the spot.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: Right now I’m tracking w/ my Ssl 2, and my Avantone CV-12 and a Kaotica Eyeball

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: My favorites are pretty typical. Michael, Prince, Stevie, Marvin, and Jay Z. On the production side, Quincy, Dr. Dre, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Kanye, PHARRELL, 9th Wonder, Dre & Vidal, Rocwilder, Battlecat, and JR Rotem.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: The most common work I do for clients usually consists of songwriting, referencing vocals, laying background vocals, writing and arranging harmonies, and beat making.
