Interview with Claire Dodin

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm very proud of my work on The High Meows as I created the show; I also write and record the songs (with guest composers and artists). https://www.youtube.com/@thehighmeows

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently working on the meowsical series "The High Meows", writing songs, singing and being musical director (on going). I'm also producing, musical directing and singing on Pinkfong songs (on going) for their official Youtube channel, we celebrated 150 songs for them last October.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I will do everything I can to make you really happy about the result.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I just love singing, I forget about time or anything else when I sing.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: Can I do children voices? The answer is yes. Turn around time? It depends on my current work load and the amount to record. I'm usually pretty fast. For a fairly simple children song with a few harmony tracks, 24h/48h is usually enough.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: People may think that I'm expensive because of the body of work and awards I have, but I'm mostly motivated by music and creativity, money is not the primary motivator for me so if I feel that I am a good fit for you I will work with you on what ever budget you can afford.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: What is your song about? What do you want to say? What is the purpose of the song?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Listen to my voice sample and check that my singing style is the right fit for your song. My style is very clean/ musical theater. If you are looking for R&B or pop embellissements I'm not right for you, but if you need a powerful message to come across or if storytelling is an important part of your song then I can deliver something great.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: I would prefer to take a few books, I can make music with things around me, I don't need gear.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I've been in the business for over twenty years, starting in musical theater on stage then I moved on to TV and film with voice work (spoken and singing), mostly for animation.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: My style is at the same time playful and intense, clear vocals.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: I would love to work with Sutton Foster, Lea Salonga, Bernadette Peters because they are such incredible performers with outstanding voices.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: Don't try to please everyone or the result will end up being bland, be true to yourself and trust in your vision, only follow advise that feels right for you and does not betray your artistic vision.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: Children's music, musical theater, jazz

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: My strongest skill is within the musical theater range, character driven songs.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I bring my creativity and storytelling. I come from a musical theater background, I like songs with purpose that tell stories.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: For singing: You send me your music/lyrics and a vocal guide and I send you back tracks tuned and cleaned. For lyrics/Melody: You either send me your music and tell me what you'd like the song to be about and I'll send you back lyrics and vocal guide. Or, you tell me what kind of song you want and I'll send you lyrics and rough melody for you to write arrangements.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I own a professional recording studio in LA with custom built double wall booth and Neumann microphone.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: I'm a huge fan of Steven Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown and John Williams

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: Voices for animation (children, animals, creatures and sometimes adult humans)
